Scams like these

Here's one for the books. I was talking with a friend the other day and he said his aged mother-in-law (90) recently got a letter saying someone in the UK had died and they were looking for the remaining relatives. She'd been born there but lived in Aus for 70 years. Anyway it seemed like the usual scam so it was about to go in the bin when someone checked up with another relative living in Australia and found out it was actually genuine. It turned out it was some cousin who'd inherited earlier but didn't have any children and there was some clause in the will about living relatives in their generation receiving the proceeds of the estate. There must have been a lot of them as it only ended up being about $20K but it was a nice windfall for her.
So it's not always a scam.... but on the balance of probabilities it is probably a scam.

Today I got my first “dear dad I lost my phone, here’s the new number, i need some cash” text in over two years. I thought they had petered out for good 🤷‍♂️

Me too but mine said they were using a mates phone (which started with +65 and had only about 6 digits) and wanted me to just send a reply txt. Not sure what that might have achieved.

Bankwest Mastercard got compromised a few weeks back.
Not sure how they got the details, rang my mobile number asking for the authorization codes.
Was on the hold to the real Bankwest for quite a while when they rang my mobile.
Didn't muck around with the dollars involved.
Now have new cards.
