Hey all,

Just planning a potential trip to Japan later this year. I have been before, but my SO has not. Although she is a huge fan of Japanese culture and super excited we can finally get there.

So, we want to stay in a ryokan or 2, which I've done, but the place I stayed at was expensive and disappointing. So, with so many regular contributors on AFF having been to Japan, I'm asking for any recommendations for a great ryokan. Our itinerary is still very open. So any places you have been that you would highly recommend?

Happy to hear any thoughts. Many thanks in advance.

A few years back, I did an onsen tour with my extended family. For me, the most memorable ryokan I stayed at during that trip - and one of the most memorable places I've experienced in all my travels, full stop! - was the Hawai Bokoro Onsen Ryokan, in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture. I can't post a link as I'm still on a low post count, but I think the website is bokoro dot com, and it's listed as "Bokoro" on TripAdvisor. It is located right next to a large lake (Lake Togo), with many of the rooms offering stunning lake views, and there is even a unique lake-top onsen + foot bath facility.

Thanks JMEL,

I found it and it looks quite good. Although not what I was expecting. Beautiful setting. But certainly worth investigating. We shall add it to our list :) As our itinerary is pretty much wide open.

Many thanks

Good point burmans,

something very traditional , small and private on the scale of 10 to 20 rooms. Expense is not too much of a problem.
