Hi folks,

Been a while since I've been here, life keeping me busy and now have a baby boy :)

My question is: I've been saving points for two business class round the world tickets for my wife and myself. I understand that with Qantas a J class RTW fare starts at 280,000 points. I'm up to about 500,000 points at the moment, but how does it work for infants?

From memory, if they are under 2 yrs of age it's usually half the fare for international flights right? Does that still apply if wife and I are using points? Or if I were to use points for an infant, is it half the points?

Appreciate any advice here.

Cheers!

From the days when ours was under 2 and having researched it, I believe that when flying on a QF award, a lap infant is FREE! a nice perk of QFF. But I don't know whether that holds true for QF awards on partner airlines (which you would be using on a RTW award).

Firstly, congrats on the birth of your son!

Cant say exactly but will share some experiences.

Last year my wife and baby son joined me on a business trip. After we exhausted the possibility of award seats we had to purchase a ticket. I wanted to let my wife & son (lap infant) take my J seat (business paid) while I took the Y seat (self paid). QF were happy to do so however they wanted to charge us 10% of a full fare J ticket for our son! I ended up downgrading my J seat so we could all sit together back in Y

We also found out during another attempt for an AA award flight for the wife and baby that AA charge 10% of the standard ticket price for a lap infant (you can not use points for the baby). A paper ticket is also required for the lap infant (which caused us hassles in physically picking up the ticket in time - again, we ended up buying tickets! :()

Good luck!

Paid tickets on QF - definitely 10% for the lap child.
Paid/award tickets on AA (using AAdv miles) - definitely 10% for the lap child.
Award QF tickets (using QF points) - 0 for the lap infant.

As i said the above doesn't cover QF award tickets (QF points) on other airlines - it could be 0 as it's using QF points or it could be 10% as per the other airlines' rules. I think you will need to contact QF to find out definitively.

is that for int'l as well?
i had redeemed qf points for the following and both times, our baby girl (8mth) travelled free (had to pay taxes/charges though):

- BA J from SYD to SIN
- BA Y+ from BKK to SYD

So confirmed - even partner awards using QFF allow lap infants for free (though taxes and charges apply). This is not an insubstantial perk of QFF compared to others (eg AAdv) for those with lap infants. for eg using AAdv with a lap infant one either needs to pay for an award seat for an infant, or to pay the 10% lap infant fare (plus taxes/charges) as if on a paid fare. When travelling in premium cabins the savings of the 10%/award cost is quite considerable.

That's awesome - thanks for the replies - I'll let you know how I go when I entually book it (need about 80,000 more points).

Cheers
