I had to make a quick trip to Melbourne for a meeting early in the morning in Saint Kilda. I found the Royce Boutique Hotel very close to where I needed to be and had a look.

$250 seemed excellent value for what I read about it, and having arrived it’s an absolute steal. Nearest hotels are Pullman and Mercure for between $160 and $260.

Retro luxurious decor, I guess would be the theme. Art Deco. Lots of bevelled mirrors, soft furnishings, easy chairs and the like.

Not far from the CBD and I think I’ll be back certainly.

The Royce has been a consistent performer for decades, and as you pointed out is excellent value.

Uh-oh. The aircon was a bit loud for my liking. So I froze the room beforehand, then had it on 19 degrees, 'auto fan' for sleep.

Woke up hot during the night : 23 degrees. Re-set it, but warm again when I woke up.

I asked on checking-out. Yes, the air con has a motion sensor. So during the night, it doesn't cool anymore  That's a deal-breaker for me, although I could employ the 'put a balloon to bob in the airstream' technique, as per the thread on this topic.
