Sorry, I misread your post initially. On transit they will confiscate any alcohol so purchase mini bottles at MEL and finish them before arriving. You can take alcohol into Brunei if staying by filling out the yellow alcohol customs form available just after security. Unfortunately that means the BWN-MEL leg was dry.

I remember as a kid visiting BNE airport for an open day where you could walk through a Royal Brunei 767 aircraft.

Gold plated everything in the first class on their bathrooms is what I remember.

Yes you can take it in. Fill out the declaration form and keep that with you.
Have not tried to leave the country with alcohol so can’t comment on that although I have heard that people have had success doing it

Definitely no sale of alcohol at airport or anywhere else in Brunei.
I have heard of people taking 50ml bottles onboard to leave BWN but have not tried this myself

No doubt the "center" of the universe is in north America.

The centre of the universe is in Australia, but it certainly is not in Sydney, being somewhat north

It used to fly there. I flew it to SYD maybe 16 years ago. Can't recall when it ceased the route. It also used to fly to DRW and maybe elsewhere in Australia.

The timetable ex MEL and forthcoming ex BNE means no immediate onward connections to most places in Asia on its network, so this small airline has or will become unattractive for almost anything that isn't a trip to LHR.

Brunei certainly flew to BNE for years - in fact I believe it was the first place in Australia it went - as it also once flew to PER. I bought a ticket for my daughter business-class BNE to London in 2002.

Non muslims over 18 are allowed to take 2l of spirits into Brunei and this won’t be confiscated at the airport. We buy the mini bottles from DF and consume them on board and any unopened bottles won’t be confiscated. The staff of BI are very tolerant but ask that you show discretion and not flaunt it and they will not touch any empty bottles and prefer that you pour your drinks out of sight. I found the best way is to buy the minis and pour them into your drinks and then put the empty bottles into a non see through paper bag and then dispose of them in the toilet bin before disembarking. On a flight from MEL-BWN I might only have 3-4 drinks for the whole trip and if you do appear intoxicated on board or at arrival there will be issues

And there are now some sale fares available ex BNE for travel in the second half of the year. BNE-BWN is around $500 return, BNE-DXB is ~$850 and BNE-BWN LHR under $1k return.

about 15 years ago I think it was, flew BNE/AKL/BNE on a BI 757-200 & back on a Royal Tongan 757-200. BI had leased the BI 757-200 to Royal Tongan. Gold paint everywhere inside. I think the reason for these 2 flights was the BI aircraft painted up in Royal Tongan colours was going to BWN I presume for maintenance, so for a short time, Royal Tongan flights were on an identical BI 757-200, just with a BI paint job.
