I booked flights tonight from Coffs Harbour through to Mt Gambier. I paid $136 for 2 Qantas flights from CFS to MEL, which was an excllent price. Then on to Regional Express to Mt Gambier. Their prices are always high for the kilometres flown, but you expect this from regional carriers who have monopolies. (Come on QF Link, get a service going to the Mount!)

I completed the online details as per usual, and noticed that REX would also forward your itinerary via SMS if requested. I thought that to be a good idea. I hit the complete button and everything was done. About a minute later I received the text. Imagine my surprise when I found out that $4.80 was added to my tax invoice for SMS services! That's $9.60 for 2 tiny text messages.

I will be voicing my disgust to REX management tomorrow. It most probably won't do any good, but it will help me vent some steam. In the meantime, DON'T agree to SMS from REX, and if this crass profiteering continues, avoid the airline at all costs. They are no longer a small country business - they are rip off merchants like most of the rest.

There, I've had my say and that feels better .....

I assume the details of the costing was in the fine print that you, as would most others, overlooked.

Yep, you're right. It was indeed. That still doesn't make it right. And businesses wonder why they go broke...;)

I agree entirely. Something to be careful of in future.

Let us know if and how they respond to your complaint.

I noticed Straitman that you once flew with Ansett. I have to confess that I was part of the aggressive TN sales team during the late 80s - early 90s that took most of Ansett's business customers away. In hindsight, we were too good. Losing Ansett was not a good thing for competition.

Cheers!

You were not aggressive enough to get me or the company I work for though. I also would not accept too much credit if I was you as AirNZ and poor Yield Management practises sealed the fate of AN.

You are correct Bill, but we did come in on the tail end of bad management and strip the carcase of what was a world class airline. TN was also a great airline until QF took it over, when is when I got out of the business.

How things have changed in the last 18 years!

Regards.

Remember what we used to pay for domestic airfares... at what Ansett charged - they should have been the best in the world! (QF not being any better in the low fares dept).

Anyway back on topic... Rex aren't exactly my favourite operator. Frequently flights simply don't turn up, and you should see how little they pay their pilots (then complain that QF/DJ/JQ poach them )

For a smaller airline Rex are OK, on the Wagga Run they seem to be cheaper and more reliable than Qantas and they are the only airline giving us the Melbourne link and still at reasonable rates

I prefer their aircraft to the Dash 8 Qantas use, my only dispointment was when they took off the 8:30am flight to Sydney, it was excellent for doing business in a single day. As I live 100+km from the airport the 6:30 flight is to early and the 10am one to late so I have to fly down the day before now addig the cost of Accom.

I tend to use Qantas due to my FF points and Q Club Membership but still have a soft spot for Rex as they are all that remains from the old Ansett.

I remember flying with them (Kenndal) during the period following the collapse and having as few as three of us on a flight.

Revenue by stealth always comes back to haunt companies. Usually reflected by customers, even in limited markets, using an alternative company when the opportunity arises.

 It is only $2.40 per SMS. I find this cheaper compare to the airlines in Europe
