I am trying to book two reward business class seats MEL-AUK return. I am pretty flexible with dates, but so far it seems I can't find a single suitable set of mid-week flights. Is it that there are truly no reward seats, or is it the recurring problem with the Velocity website which means I need to call the service centre and book over the phone (sigh)? It's times like this that I think I made a massive mistake switching from Qantas.

VA doesn't offer business class on trans-Tasman flights they operate themselves. Some VA marketed flights operated by Air New Zealand do have business class , but you can't book reward flights on codeshares. You may be able to use Velocity points to purchase a J seat on an NZ marketed and operated flight, but NZ reward inventory isn't searchable online. Unfortunately, yes, you will have to call.

VA also don't fly to Alakanuk (AUK) Airport ;)

Auckland is AKL but as Fruitcake has said, there is no Business on VA operated aircraft (and only a very small number of NZ flights, most are A320's which have Economy only too).

VA do offer Premium Economy to AKL though, but it's not particularly nice.
