Repositioning cruise from Seattle

Hi - thinking about doing this

Transpacific Hawaii Cruise | 21nt dep 5 Oct 2018 | Explorer of the Seas

Any thoughts on Royal Caribbean and any knowledge of what the Internet speed would be like. Thinking about taking this but would need to do some work while I'm away

Any Travel agents who think they can get me a good deal let me know

TIA
Expect slow internet. Do you have status with RCI or Celebrity that will give you some free internet hours. Being satellite you woukd need to do as much as you could off line then go online to upload/check mail etc. A lot of sea days if you are not used to that.US online TAs are often quite cheap in comparison to AU ones.

RCL upgraded their internet service a couple of years back, to what was the fastest at sea at the time.

Generally it's pretty good but it of course depends on location, and time of day (and environmental factors). However, it is possible of streaming at the highest speed (they have two grades) so is generally sound.

No status with either

I need database access so would need to be live so that may not work

Lots of sea days = lots of books and walking

I was on the Legend of the Seas last year (on its final voyage before being handed to its new owners, Thomson) and purchased the "non-streaming" for 24 hours. This was my speedtest while in the Gulf of Aden:

I purchased 24 hours of "streaming" later in the voyage - and it was indeed fast enough for Skype, but I didn't screenshot my speedtest.

I do remember being impressed that I got faster speeds in the middle of the Red Sea (no land in sight) than I would have gotten at home at the time (4Mbit, pre-NBN)

The latency would likely have been similar anyway.

The non streaming option doesn’t sound like it will work for you VPS. Even though the internet has been upgraded I have always found it not suitable for anything other than mail and basic photo uploads etc. I get some hours free but this isn’t at the fastest I wouldn’t think. It can be expensive if you need to be on their biggest plan.

Yeah, if you're going to be live work, go for streaming; it's only about $5 difference/day for the upgrade.

Package cost is about US20-25/day. They also have discounts for multiple devices if you need that.

I was on Royal Caribbean cruise from Singapore last month and the wifi was excellent. They have two different speeds and one of them is specifically for streaming movies and videos. The Voom package you would need is surf and stream. This was approx. $15US per day for one device and if you bought it with a drinks package went down to $10pd. If there are more of you in the cabin you can buy a package for multiple devices. You can also just buy the Voom package for one device and log out of it and use another device, but only one device at a time. The prices were $20pd on board, so suggest buying it online before your cruise as it is the above price or cheaper.

Thanks - I tried to look up the price but unless you have a cruise booked you couldn't. What did you think of RC?

Anyone with any experience with relocation cruises? Would they let you get on in Hawaii for this one?

It was a beautiful ship, and the staff were very friendly. We took the drinks package which sounds expensive but was good value for this cruise which was 5 days - would not do it on a longer than 5 day cruise (liver would not survive!) in that you could have coffee and cold drinks and bottled water and your alcohol all included. We were in a suite so that made the journey more comfortable as it was a very full ship and culturally very different. We did the QEll last year from Southampton and that was excellent. Would certainly do another RC cruise from a different port.

They're fairly popular, though have many sea days which some like and some not so much.

That particular itinerary won't be so ideal though as the ports aren't as attractive as those going through Tahiti.

As for boarding in Honolulu, they likely would although you need to request... but there wouldn't be any discount on your fare so not something likely worth pursuing unless time is much more value to you than money!
