Cosmology of the Big Bang. Love it. Love the use of capitals as if to signify this is something that indeed occurred and we need to cherish the moment. Shame someone wasn't there to document the moment then we'd all have a clear picture of our origins.

You see everyone believes in myths.
But of course. How else would religions get started? ;)

No need to duck.

I'm a simple person and to me Creation has a lot more credibility than the big bang theory. I just can't buy the theory that a rice bubble was floating in space and exploded to form what is around us. Space? What space? The space that was there before the big bang? How did that get there? An earlier big bang?

The one that gets me the most is watching a human being grow. It is fascinating just how much is auto pilot. Another random act? We seem to have lots of random acts to explain life.

And plants and vegetables were so advanced they got together and decided they needed to seed to continue to evolve or was than another random act by mother nature?

I don't need any proof for my beliefs. The proof of Creation is all around me and with Creation it is logical that religion will follow but not all religions have got it right.

I'm sure there is plenty of man-in-the-street level literature available to help you answer your questions ... if you are interested (Scientific American comes to mind). Buy some books, enrol in some uni courses ... if you are interested in finding out and/or learning about 'the other side' to make an informed comparison.

By all means have your beliefs; I can admire some-one who sticks to their beliefs, especially in today's anti-religious environment. But recognise that they are beliefs. There is far, far less evidence for the stories in your beliefs than the scientific explanation for the beginning of the universe and space/time.

I must admit though, I have a soft spot for Bishop Ussher. At uni we had an annual 'Birth of the Earth' party and BBQ on the Saturday night closest to 22 October.

I've had a late-in-life conversion to a love of history and other cultures. I don't just take photos of ancient shrines/churches/places of ritual, I buy a book each time as my souvenir of the place and read up on them and try to understand them. Still haven't found one that explains the world around me though.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

No. Right thread. Spreading my wealth of knowledge.

But that's the problem. It's just mirth and humour you are spreading, not knowledge. While as I believe you work in IT which relies on rationality, quantum theory and practice to function, not medieval alchemy, how unfortunate that you are not prepared to learn even a modicum of science to counter and enlighten medieval thinking.

Such 'beliefs' are dangerous for society and leads to things like the anti-vac campaign, denial of climate change and much more. May as well join the Senator from Qld on the crusade trail.

So Creationists are just stupid people right? That's the problem right there. The arrogance of modern science thinking all their theories are right and everyone that doesn't think the same are wrong. The big bang theory is the biggest laugh of all.

A couple of things are a dead give away for me

- we have advanced so far that we are now able to create life and are just starting to understand DNA which is a very complex set of instructions in order for life to exist. Why is science so arrogant that they are able to creare life yet dismiss any talk of a Creator? Religious books spoil it? You obviously don't realise there are many scientists who are top in their field yet are Creationists and not necessarily religious.
- the function of the human body. Everything from cells to blood to arteries blood to muscles and joints. So complex yet so efficient.

I don't believe in a series of random events as an explanation for life in our universe. That doesn't make me stupid as you are implying.

The totally off-topic thread

I really think that we need to let people have their beliefs and those things that nourish them in life even when we disagree. We can say we disagree but not on an individual level, just keep it general.

My belief - Mother Nature has it over all of us. There is some kind of logic going on but I don't have the intellect/ knowledge to interpret it.

I'm getting old and rambling.

People can believe what ever they like but a lot of science is fact....

Re: The totally off-topic thread

The value I see in religion or other belief systems is the mental support that it gives to people when they are going through stressful times such as family deaths etc.

I don't believe in it myself but if it helps people process and deal with those sorts of events then it can only be a good thing.

Like everything in life, it is the extremes that cause the issue - whether that be religion, work, eating or exercise to name a few examples.

Ain't that the truth !

Unfortunately a lot of scientific facts do not stand the test of time.
As Pushka alludes to there is so much we and the scientists still cant explain.

Give us time :p

Natural selection, fitness and evolution explain most of what some people believe to be "creation" though.

The totally off-topic thread

So we need to work out what is fact and what that means in reality. Sometimes fact doesn't explain everything.

And there is so much we don't understand yet. But agree the beauty of science is the constant questioning. Religion tends to be dogmatic. As long as we don't accept that science is the ultimate truth. It isn't yet and probably will never be.

Maybe it's an age thing. The older we get the less we realize we know.

As well as getting old and rambly, I've had three Rose's to add. Plus cold medication.

Of course they are entitled to whatever strange views they wish, but not when they promote unscientific and frankly demonstratively wrong views in a public forum. Such views and comments must be countered and fought and not simply let go, otherwise it's to the detriment of us all and society in general.

What a load of rubbish.

Religion is a test of faith. You cant argue against it. I'm not religious. At all. But there is 'something' I can't explain. That's a kind of faith. Hence I understand why people follow religion. It's a 'known' to them that gives them comfort. I don't know what the 'something' is, hence my 'Mother Nature' call.

It certainly isn't the current established 'religions'. That is man's attempt to explain that 'something' but it doesn't work for me. It also isn't science either except for the 'ongoing questioning' part although maybe too many times decisions are made on the basis of the incomplete science only later on to be found to be invalid.
