I thought I'd start a separate thread on this as I had seen it mentioned by Cove deep inside another thread.

I've just completed a redemption for Mrs Albatross to the UK next year, the trip is part SQ, part LH and becomes a Star Alliance redemption.

As she will be in the UK for about 4 weeks, the separate outbound and return bookings means that there is some flexibility to adjust the return flights.

If the booking is done as a single *A redemption for both outbound and return, then it is not possible to change the return travel.

Some limitations to changes on the separate return booking; There would have to be redemption inventory available in order to change flights.

If alternate redemption not possible then at least the booking can be cancelled and receive credit of the return points and taxes.

Id be interested to hear of peoples experiences with changing *A redemptions.

I have no experience with *A redemptions - but frequently book one way redemptions with SQ.

ALWAYS book one way if you can - gives plenty flexibility to change your return if you desire.

Again apologies if I should not have posted.

Yes I started the one way thing as a result of J and F bookings out about 353 days on QF and if you waited the outgoing flight would have vanished by the time the return 353 day timing had come around. Then you have what I would call dust because someone else had booked that flight ahead of you.

The fee to cancel a one way booking is modest but please dont tell QF.

Moving forward I joined a second program (SQ) so I have choices that have really worked in well because sometimes a need to travel comes up at quite short notice or your return date really needs to change.Often with QF that would mean longhaul on QF in Y or nothing.

Flexibility is a big idea with all travel plans.

So far I have booked most of my redemptions via SQ as one-way as:

* flexibility
* 353 days out like Cove to gain seats on popular routes.

I have not changed any of my Thai Flights. But have changed SQ flights. Was a breeze.

However one drawback with one-way redemptions is that you lose option to have a stopover (one for Saver, and in each direction if Standard). So far I have not wanted stopovers and so has not been a restriction for me.

Thanks for your note on making SQ changes as a breeze lovetravellingoz.
Do you do that on the web site or phone?
So far we have not needed to make a change in the first 18 months of points flying with SQ.

.

If you have booked on-line you can change on-line for free. Phone will see the 15% discount added back on, unless there was a reason why the on-line was not working.

If you have booked by phone, you will need to amend by phone.

Great I can do that.
I dont spend as much time on SQ site because a few clicks and I am done.
QF is more of a struggle and we do way more domestic flights so I am more familiar with QF site.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
