Re-qual just before membership year ends?

I haven't been very loyal to Qantas lately, and as such, will lose my QF Silver status in Jan 2014. I've only credited 40 SCs to my account over the year.

Is there much point in attempting to re-qualify before my membership year ends (Jan 2014)?

My understanding is that regardless of if I re-qualify or not, my SC slate will be wiped clean come Feb 2014, so I'll have to start all over again if I'm aiming for Gold. Sure I'll need 50 SCs less to gain Silver again if I do it now (and minus the 40 I have sitting there), but that doesn't really help when you're trying to get higher on the status ladder.

Am I missing anything?

no point busting a gut to requalify this year if you are going for gold very early in your next membership year and can live without the silver benefits for a few months. use the money for flights in your next membership year... then you'll essentially get two years of gold (depending on how early you qualify).

There's some quite noticeable benefits for PS vs. NB if you are flying internationally to get to that SG level next year (e.g. priority check-in, free seat selection, extra baggage, etc.) but if primarily doing it on domestic, then I wouldn't be too concerned.

Thanks for that everyone! I'm planning on qualifying for Silver pretty early next year through domestic flights, so that shouldn't be much of an issue.
