re : access to airport lounges

Hello there, i am a first time poster, however due to few unsuccessful attempts, i feel i am repeating myself, each time my message gets smaller, due to maybe it being deleted, not sure what i am doing wrong.

I was hoping to gain some knowledge on accessing airport lounges, here, (melb.) syd, and then San fran, and another 5 american lounges, in our brief travel for 1 month. It seems that if I joined for myself and husband, an annual membership, it may not be used, except for once more later in year.

For this reason, i was seeking a temporary access for the duration of this trip, any suggestions, please?? any advice will be really helpful. kind regards, Kate:)
 
Welcome aboard AFF kate Hass.

I'm assuming that you & your partner are planning to join the Qantas Club on an annual membership.

Members of the Club are entitled to access Qantas Club lounges, British Airways (BA) lounges^ (Terraces and Executive Club lounges) and American Airlines® (AA) Admirals Club lounges.

To access the Qantas or partner lounges, you must be on flight marketed and operated by the partner airline (AA or BA) whose lounge you wish to visit.

This is separate to any access entitlement if travelling in a higher cabin class (Business or First).

Hi many thanks for your quick responce. The qantas club seems good, as long as we are doing multiple trips, in the 12 months. At this stage, as we nearly finish this month, I know of only 2 trips until the end of the year. And not sure about trips next year. So was trying to see ... if it is worth my $$$ joining, or some other way, of like a "pay as you go system. " I guess this doesn't happen, or I would have heard of it.

When we were flying domestically I recall paying to go to the Virgin Lounge, and also have been a guest at a couple of lounges, ... so just checking out options, at this point in time...

I am still getting used to all the icons, and posting requirements on here, so am a little confused... however I WILL IMPROVE...

What a great way to gain knowledge on so many topics... i am impressed.

Day passes do exist . . . depending on the airline.

Which airline(s) are you flying in the US?
 
sorry am getting lost in this ....qantas... then united airlines... x3, american airways x2,and a southwest airlines, and then qantas again... helllppppp
this is so confusing... keep posting reply ,,...disapeared into cyberspace..!
 
Hmmm. Serfty will likely be more help on the non-American Airlines American airlines but I think it's safe to say that a Qantas Club membership will be of no help to you beyond Sydney and Melbourne (at least based on the information you've provided in your post first post) . . .

Unless you mean American Airlines (www.aa.com) (not American Airways)?
 
Thanks all.... will get back to this tomorrow... yes does say... AA in the itinery for American Airways... who knows, you can tell that i don't get around much... well domestic travel in the past... but not having been a big traveller overseas, this is 2nd . trip only OS. thanks again... going to catch some zzzzzz now. bye this was fun,...will check it out tomorrow. k. x

A Qantas club membship would assist with the Qantas and American Airlines flights and be no help at all with the United and Southwest airlines flights.
 
In most cases, a lounge membership, such as Qantas Club membership, only permits access to the lounge when you are flying with that airline or one of its partner airlines. So with Qantas Club membership you can only access lounges when flying that day with Qantas, American Airlines or British Airways. Its not going to help you get into a lounge when you are flying with United or Southwest.

Also note that for two people travelling, you only require one Qantas Club membership as you are entitled to take in a guest who is travelling with you.

Don't expect too much from lounges in the USA. They generally have very little free food options. For a single trip, you may like to consider just spending the money on restaurants and bars at the airports while you wait for flights. It could work out cheaper and provide better options. Of course that won't get you showers etc, but it can be a lot of money to spend just for that.

For my family trip next week, while I am entitled to lounge access (by virtue of my OneWorld Emerald status), the other 5 members of my family are not. So for the 3 airport visits during this trip I am happy to bypass the lounge and be content to buy a few coffees/snacks airside if needed. We will just find a comfortable place to sit and read etc while waiting for the flights.

In my opinion, lounge access is most valuable when departing on a late night flight after a day of working/travelling/sightseeing and wanting a shower before a long flight. Or for breakfast before an early morning flight so I can avoid eating an airline economy class breakfast on board. Otherwise I can generally find a comfortable seats in the terminal (either at the gate or in a bar/eatery etc) to pass the time.
 
Travelling on a variety of airlines there is probably no one program worth joining.If one of you joins the Qantas Club both of you will have access to the QP before your QF flights and to the Admirals club before your AA flights(but not every airport has an Admiral's club).So 8 individual lounge visits-so you can work out a cost per visit and is it worth it.
AA will let you buy a day pass-but you would both have to buy them,it is I think $US50 and IMHO definitely not worth it.
There are 2 other possibilities-Priority Club-need to check which airports will have access and then work out cost per visit-but doesn't matter what airline you fly.
Diners club.They do have lounges at a few airports and it wont matter what airline you fly.Both of you need a card in your name but it can be as an additional card holder.Certainly worth considering if either of you are in a professional organisation that can get a discounted(hopefully free) Diners.
The last suggestion is to search here about being guested into a lounge.We are such friendly wonderful people and occasionally will help out.threads which give our availability are here-

Only applies to holders of the chargecard, not other co-branded AMEX platinum cards.

I don't believe any co-branded AMEX cards are charge cards anyway, I think they're all credit cards only?

My response was to a post which referred to platinum cards. I clarified the access to lounge was to holders of platinum charge card, not platinum credit cards. And, btw, also to Centurion card holders. I won't speculate whether Centurion charge card or credit card because it don't know if the latter exists. (I doubt it does).
