Anyone been there recently? I am taking advantage of the KrisFlyer special for Syd - Rar 12.5K points as I have 23K points expiring soon so off on a Friday & back on the Thursday (can't redeem for the return so have to pay but reasonable for direct flight). Will stay on Rarotonga, snorkel, see the sights & do the culture thing not clubbing. Looking at 4 star + & would welcome advice.

Hi there Dr Bob,

am in a hurry so just some quick things for now....

Visited Rarotonga last year for a week, with family. Stayed at Manea Beach Villas, which is set on Muri Lagoon. Got a fantastic cabin right on the water. Similar may not be best for you if travelling solo, but I cannot recommend the Muri Lagoon area enough! Absolutely beautiful, perfect for snorkelling or cayaking. They have street food market thing every few nights which is also great.

Get a car, or scooter if you are a rider - the island is perfect size for casual exploring.

Everything is relaxed and the people are truly wonderful.

Thanks juddles. will look that one up, travelling with +1. Last time I hired a scooter was in Thailand. Couldn't work out why it didn't turn well. When I lent in she lent out so we'll get a car this time.

I went for 4 nights last year. Some thoughts here in my TR - Australia to the Netherlands (via Cook Islands & Japan)

The accommodation I used was closer to 3 stars than 4 so I won't make any specific recommendations there. But lots to do and a very interesting destination. The progressive dinner was a highlight for me.

Great Mattg the dinner sounds good. We did something similar in Fiji where we were taken to a village for lunch and an afternoon explore. Having done a little search juddles villas look fine so I think +1 will lower her sights and she will look at 3 star. Are the small cars cheap to hire for the week or just the days required?

If you do decide to hire a scooter - is it worth taking your own helmet with you (I have no idea if you'd get that through cabin baggage as I haven't tried to fly with a helmet before..)
