I'm pretty sure MEL-LAX was going to be the first route simply because MEL was going to be ready for A380's before SYD. Since A380 deliveries are running so late SYD has had extra time to prepare so I reckon SYD-LAX will get regular services before MEL.

I thought the main reason was because QF has only half a dozen or so 744ER's required for the extra distance for a fully loaded MEL-LAX. Thus to increase MEL-LAX services, you need either more 744ER's or A380's. And since we are not getting any more ER's anytime soon, A380 will fit nicely! Where as SYD-LAX can just use a regular 744.

QF likes to use the -ER on LAX-SYD run as they can load in more freight for some extra income.
