For anyone who as flown into this airport it can be a arm rest gripping experience.

I just notice today the closure gets a small mention in the SMH world new section.

From my Galapagos TR 2 years ago,
....Arrival into UIO revealed a small, disorganised airport. After more than an hour in the queue to get through immigration (a passenger collapsed in the queue!), we were greeted by mountains of luggage stacked sky high. The most popular colours were blue and black, and guess what colour our bags were? Yup, blue and black. My next suitcase will be bright pink!!!
Some pictures I took of the old Quito airport:

the (old) airport is very close to the city! I gather the new one is more than 1 hour from the city...

....seconds after take off from Quito airport:shock:

this shot was taken about 30 seconds after take off and shows the valley that the airport lies within....

I have flown in and out of UIO and it is certainly hair raising! Not sure if it was the approach of altitude sickness (probably the latter) that lead me to faint in the baggage claim area and spend 20 minutes chowing down on the onsite medical team's oxygen.
