I have just started to fly a fair bit domestically (most Aust Capitals) and make my own bookigs.

Can someone tell me some indirect flight options/combinations to get to WP more quickly?

Thanks:)

Where are you based?

Most of the flight between the major captial cities are direct. but one tip is, don't book any fare class that only gets you disc Y, as they are half the status credits. so avoid fare classes E, N, O, Q (red eDeals) and G, L, M, S, V (Super Saver)

Hi,

One good way which is quite cost effective is to split the trip. If you are going to Perth, go via Adelaide.

You will find you will get more SC's this way but if you are flying mainly Y or disc Y I think you will struggle to reach WP. MEL-PER return for instance in disc Y only gets you 40 SC's and you need 1400, that's 35 trips to WP and in Y you still need 18 return Mel-Per trips.

Probably worth pointing out though that if you are doing a lot of domestic travel, Gold is readily achieveable and gives you many of the benefits of platinum (especially lounge access to QC). Not as good, but not bad either.

I am of the personal opinion that unless you are doing a bit of international travel then WP wont really offer you much more aside from some extra points, and maybe, a rare op-up.

As per what doc said, Gold isnt that hard to attain, and anything above the 700SC's required to qualify is an added bonus.

I dont see many opportunities domestically to max SCs unless you are willing to pay for them.

The quickest way I think would be in paid J.

The marginal cost of extra flights might be less than the price of the QP membership as well...

Can you us know your current level, SCs to the next level and rollover date, as this will let us advice on the challenge you will have ahead.

Platinum status should result in:
  • better seating pre-allocation for domestic flights
  • 100% status bonus points on flights (up from 50% for Gold)
  • access to domestic business class lounges
  • access to the Premium Desk when calling Qantas call centre
  • check-in at some premium desks reserved for Business Class and OneWorld Emeralds
For many people, these are significant benefits.

  • Seating allocation - Agree
  • Points - Already stated that
  • Gold status allows same access to domestic lounges, no extra benefit as WP
  • Call Centre I dont see as a huge bonus as most bookings these days are largely done online
  • Priority checkin for domestic is the same for Gold/WP
as per previous, not a huge benefit compared to the extra cost, flights required, etc.

on the other hand, if there was even a little bit of OS travel required, then the advantages are significant

I have just moved to Aust from the US and have just joined so Bronze I think is base level

From what I have read in the forums, comp upgrades are far easier to achieve in the US than Aust:(

NM was talking about Domestic J lounge. Gold does not get you access.
  • Priority checkin for domestic is the same for Gold/WP
Not when there is a Business/OWE line.

Be mindful though that here we have basically 2 main airlines (Virgin & QF) with JQ on the side and if you really stretch things, Tiger et al.

In the U.S. there is a stack of competitors, and part of there strategies to maintain customer loyalty is op-ups.

Are you a member of Status with American Airlines?

Gold access only gets access to Qantas Club lounges, not to domestic Business Class lounges. Domestic Business Class lounge access is only available to Business Class passengers, Qantas Platinum and other OneWorld Emerald passengers.

The Premium Desk access means you always have your call answered quickly and by an agent both knowledgeable and empowered to assist. Its not just about making bookings, but getting assistance when things don't go to plan or you need to make changes. I have noticed the difference here when dropping back to Gold from many years as Platinum status. Some people never need to call, others call them several times a week. Those who call will notice the difference.

At some airports, they maintain multiple check-in queues, singed as:
  • Business Class, Platinum and OneWorld Emerald
  • Gold, OneWorld Sapphire and Qantas Club
  • Other
As per previous post, these can be significant advantage for some people.

Funny that Gold got me in there yesterday at SYD, looks like different rules for different airports???

and yes, I know this is against what the rules state?

(however we are only talking about MEL & SYD right?)

<correction - it probably helped that I have worked with the staff on the J Lounge desk for several years pre 2004 - so the above isnt a true reflection of what is meant to occur - sorry>

I have no problem agreeing with this, I was just giving another look at the big picture, cost over benefit and given the lack of business lounges (domestic) and the fact that only a few airports have the extra line for Plats etc.

Personally on the couple of occassions where I have dropped down from Plat status I didnt notice any difference, however for international services this is a different story

Unfortunately not a member of AA program as company policy was to fly US Airways (Platinum status achieved in Div Miles program). US Airways was excellent- received many First class upgrades being Plat status

and BNE now and CBR is on the way. Not sure of the status of other Domestic Business Class lounges.

My demotion to Qantas Gold (Lifetime Gold) has been softened by my second year as AA Executive Platinum and hence still retaining the OneWorld Emerald benefits.
