I am trying to help a good colleague of mine to get to HNL for her 60th birthday in late July 2008. It will be her 1st time overseas by herself.

She wants to get there as cheaply as possibly.

The cheapest I've found is $1440 incl of taxes flying QF product, not codeshare JQ.

Flying JQ would be around $780+++ one way to HNL and there are many QF award return flights.

So to help her get there as cheaply as possibly, would I be able to book an award HNL-SYD flight for her? She does not belong to the QFFP so I can't exactly transfer 36k across and let her do it herself.

I am willing to use 36k for her, otherwise should I wait wait wait (or is it likely) for any possible last minute JQ sale that does HNL rtn for <$800 incl taxes.

unless the "good colleague" is also an eligible family member, then under the terms and conditions of the Qantas FF program you are not able to use your FF points for a flight for her.

If she was an eligible family member, then you culd do just as you have suggested. Just make sure she knows to carry the e-ticket receipt for the return trip with her when she checks in for the outbound flight as the check-in agent may require verification of onward travel beyond the USA.

Those sorts of sales are possible, but not probable given the timeframe.

Like NM says, the Qantas FF T&C's forbid getting tickets for people outside of their definition of 'family'.

That doesn't mean you buying her a ticket will fail - just that Qantas could ask for proof that they are a relative, or fit into their definition of 'family. The request would most likely happen when you book the ticket, but could also occur when she checks in at HNL.
