I presume it's a domestic upgrade that has been confirmed.

You may be able to transfer the upgrade to the new flight is there is booking class (U) availability. There may be a service fee for this. I have not done such a thing.

If there is no U class you would probably have to cancel. If so, then:

  • If within 24 hours of the flight you lose the lot.
  • If more than 24 hours before the flight then there a 5000 point "Refund of Unused Flight Upgrade Fee".

I was in this position recently, and assumed that the rules as serfty quoted them would apply.

I cancelled my old flight online, thereby also cancelling the upgrade request. I then booked the new flight, which was on the same day.

A few days later, I received a call from Qantas querying me about the two flights on the same day, with the same origin and destination. I explained that I'd cancelled the first flight online; apparently the cancellation hadn't "stuck".

As a result, the Qantas service desk cancelled the old flight for me, and credited back the full value of points used for the upgrade request. I was quite pleased.

So, my suggestion is that if you have at least a few days before you have to fly, and don't urgently need the refund from the original flight, see what happens if you don't cancel it - you may get lucky like I did.
