Welcome to AFF. I am on my iPad at the moment and can't do a copy/paste easily so I will just tell you that there is a post that lists all the abbreviations that we use. J=business Y=economy, however it is rare that we are actually booking into the J fare bucket/class or Y i.e. full fare economy class. So where you read about someone doing a JASA, this means that it is in business but it would have been booked as a U fare. (D and C are two other business fare classes).

It takes a little bit of practice but after many late nights (early mornings) of studying AFF but with time you will be JASAing with the rest of us.

I am in the CBR QP now and it no one replies before I get home later today I will reply again with some links for you.

..noting that the OP has posted in a VA forum, so presumably wants fare classes for VA.

Y = general reference to all Economy fares. Also "whY", for obvious reasons ;)
W, Y+, PE = general reference to all Premium Economy fares.
J, C = general reference to all Business fares.
F = general reference to all First fares.

The letters themselves represent fare buckets - the ones I've mentioned above are generally the most expensive fare bucket in that fare category. Each airline uses different letters for different fares, so it's important to know that the link williamsf1 posted will give you all of the fares that VA uses, but don't assume that it's the same set of letters for QF (or any other airline for that matter).

Welcome to AFF btw :)

If you're talking about J&Y J is used in the forum as shorthand to refer to a business cabin seat on any airline, while Y is used similarly for economy (sometimes written as whY) - Y+ is premium economy.

However, the airlines all have different fare codes. Odds are more likely that the seat they're referring to as Y or J for convenience has some other official fare code. These are really only brought in more detailed and technical discussion about earn. Each airline has its own table, and a letter being a good fare code on one airline could be a terrible fare code on another.

Finding out what fare code it is before booking is another matter entirely (I find the "view page source" trick quite helpful for most airlines though).

Sorry about that. I am using the app on my iPad and I can't see under which category the posts are in.

Ok, thanks for all the replys. It's a little clearer...I think? It's a bit of a new language to learn. So loosely Y is economy , J is business, and a bunch of in between letters? Might take me a while to get the hang of it.
thanks again.

That's pretty much it! :)

Just on the point that grubbidok raised, is there any way to see what the fare class is before booking? Looking to book a trip to SIN and want to make sure it will be eligible for VA SCs and points

Yep - and it's fairly easy as well. Search for and select your flights so there's a $$ figure displayed in the red Total: box at the bottom-right of the selection page - then click the View Fare Rules link directly beneath that.

The first letter of the Fare Basis is the fare class you're after.
