just viewing it on 9news...guy walkin around with bravado and what appears to be gun (could see that on tv) ...i know im gonna get hate mail for saying this....but let the police just shoot the guy..I'M SICK OF UNBALANCED IDIOTS HOLDING THE REST OF SOCIETY TO RANSOM!!

Got to admit, sort of hoping for a shoot out (without death obviously), as my day just got interesting... and it's a bit boring right now.

I just got back from Starbucks and they wouldn't let me out the back lifts at the Hilton. Now waiting for my driver to fight through the traffic to get me to the airport.

Just shoot him already!!

Please CC me in on the hate mail because I have the same view as well.

It appears the entire CBD is in lockdown. Can you get a helicopter ride from the top of the Hilton? :p

I'm watching ABC24. Have flicked to the other channels. I need to go shopping but a bit longer watching the tv won't hurt.

I thought of that ;). No shortage of choppers overhead :).

Just made the car - so should be good (subject to traffic)

You won't be shopping in the city, loads of shops are closed.

Latest reports is he's been given a can of coke and a cig, he's at the Milano cafe in the middle of the mall.

No hostages.

I was thinking a visit to the quilt shop followed by Albany Creek Coles. Nothing classy like the city.

It appears it may be over. Gunshots heard, officers swarming on where the gunman was but can't see anything. Ambulance on scene.

A replay shows they shot something at him. A beanbag maybe? He dropped the gun and they swarmed him.

Colleague emailed all of us informing of the story. Lucky I didn't decide to go to uni today.

Seems no one has been hurt yet, which is good.

Last I heard he got seated at Milano, presumably because he couldn't actually keep standing the entire time. He was actually pointing the gun at his chin. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if he pulled the trigger.

To bring some "human fairness" to this, there hasn't been any reason established as to why he is doing what he is doing.

How sad that the treatment for depression/mental illness is death by cop and/or suicide.

There but for the grace of god we go.

The tragedy of mental illness is that when diagnosed (and it often isn't) then most people shun the person and in circumstances like this some want to to kill them. Yet with the right treatment the person can be assisted to live a fairly normal life.

We don't treat people with serious disease such as cancer like this so why do we treat people with a psychiatric illness like this?

I feel similarly. We don't know if he has a mental illness or not and the reason for stuff like this can often be a lack of mental health care/support.

If he does have a mental health issue, perhaps the system let him down before today.

But who knows.

I'm amused by some of the eyewitnesses. One woman was more interested in talking about what she was buying than what she witnessed. I guess that's the problem with interviewing the public......

I'm reasonably confident that a cancer patient threatening random members of the public with a weapon would also attract the attention of armed police.

wow..seems others are pi**ed off about the degradation of society as well !! THANKYOU ... and now seeing/hearing this guy has been put out of action!! :D well done!!! but sadly now...the police will be subject to an inquiry  (just for doing their job to protect society)!! and no doubt there will be a lawyer out there (with dollar signs in their eyes) willing to defend this guy!! YES...I'M MAD AS HELL!!
