Has anyone recently experienced QR economy long haul? My niece is contemplating using them to Europe. I love QR‘s business service but I seem to recall pre-Covid at least that Emirates premium cabin was great but economy was dire. Wondering if the same for QR.

We have an economy booking on QR metal to London in Apr 2023 , probably keen to understand how is it before trying to bid for the upgrade or rather pay the extra revenue.

Where from? And on which planes?

I'm flying MEL-DOH-MXP in May on a 10-abreast 777 (breathe in!) followed by a 9-abreast Squeezeliner so am interested in this question myself. Fortunately the tickets were on QF classic rewards (remember those?!?) and a 10 hour break in DOH overnight means that it hopefully won't be too dreadful.

(Flying back from MXP SQ to SIN, then QF to MEL.)

Not exactly recent, but I've done PER-DOH in Y around 2015. It must have been a 777. I was on a centre aisle seat. I was ridiculously tired and worn out for a night flight. I recall they had champange in Y (served a bit warm and in a plastic cup). I don't think I ate and just went to sleep as I was exhausted. I don't recall it being bad or good. Just another Y flight.

This probably doesn't help much. However, nothing stood out as being any worse than any other long haul Y flight.

Son wife and two children have flown Qatar Y frequently and will do again in May. They really like Qatar. Flying out of Adelaide.

Heavens we've only just flown business class in last 6 years, and we managed to fly to UK and USA a few times with kids in Y. We survived.

Flew Y from Adelaide to Europe last June, it was fine, plane was absolutely packed with no free seats. No seat menus were given, you had to access it via connecting to the onboard Wi-Fi.

Food and service was good, especially since they give you proper metal cutlery, however, be prepared to not receive your preferred meal choice. I was seated at the front of the second cabin and could never choose my preferred meal.

Overall it's alright but I'd definitely avoid 14 hours in Y if you have the chance.

I'd suggest to try booking on the A380 service. Y seats are wider at 18.5 inches. If at all possible, rear Y seating in the upstairs Y section behind the onboard lounge for business/first. May need status to select these Y seats. Any Velocity status may be helpful?

Anything really. My niece is only at the contemplation stage at the moment and I’m wondering whether I should recommend QR economy or not. Based on the above so far I think it’s a yes. Y is never great long haul but they can be bad Y and OK Y.

Isn’t JAL whY supposed one of the best (if you get right plane - 787: 2-4-2 seating with 33” pitch). At least for comfort.

Connections aren’t always great but a cheeky TYO stopover is interesting.

JAL Y is great (used to fly MEL-NRT-HEL a lot before they moved HEL to HND). Spacious, wide seats with generous pitch, decent food (especially ex-TYO) and an easy transit in NRT.

But unfortunately, it's nowhere near as direct as QR since they killed the NRT-HEL route (and it's a bit slow these days due to not being able to shoot across Russia). I'm awaiting my SQ flight from MXP-SIN with interest as a decent Y with an upgrade to J on the night legs would be great.

Flew Qatar economy Adelaide to Athens and return in July/August 2022. Flights were full, but overall was fairly good experience, food and entertainment were good. Newly opened lounge for OneWorld Sapphire members was pretty nice with champagne available at the bar.

I returned home last night from a trip to Paris with QR in Y. First time with Qatar and Never again - will stick with our favourites, Emirates / Singapore Airlines next time for long haul to Europe. We flew all legs both directions in very old 777s. (When we booked 6 months ago they were A350 to DOH, A380 to CDG, but aircraft changed 2 months ago - I chose QR in part due to this, so was very frustrated by the change , including our paid seats which were not honoured, despite numerous calls as the cost had 'gone up' with the plane change!)
Full flights, less leg room than I can recall in years. Food was inedible on the way over, slightly better on the way home.
The night before we flew home we were offered a 'special deal' for the 3 of us to upgrade to business for an additional $24,300...(I checked out J as we boarded, it was almost empty :( )

I don't think you need status, but you need to get in early and pay $$ (about AUD200 for Sydney-Doha leg, I think).
Status helps to secure the upper level Y seats on the A380 when booking QR in Y online when you have QR status. Next default is to other OW and partner status. I'm only sharing about the QR A380. If the flight aircraft is swapped to an 777ER, for example.. The above considerations do not apply..
