Hi Everyone,

I've just booked my first flight post achieving QFF Silver and was wondering with the option now to pre order my seats location -The best I can get on a Syd -Adel - Syd on a 737 800 is row 17 there and 16 on return flight. Both flights are next Tuesday.

Will seats closer to the front become available over the next few days or is that the best?

Not moaning, just trying work out if its better to block the seats now and see if anything better comes along or leave the reservation with no seat selection and see what the gods do on Tuesday.

Have a great day everyone.

Cheers
Andrew

More seats will become available for you to choose from at "T-80" (80 hours before the scheduled departure time).

You can change your seat allocation at any time so there's no harm in picking one now, and then trying again later on.

Considering the beat seat you can ore allocate on a 737 as a bronze is row 947, I would say row 17 is the beat you will get..

The is another thread where a member has posted screenshots of seat options as they move frm bronze, silver, gold, platinum. Wort a look and very intereting

On a 737 it’s about 16/17 for Silver, 10/11 for Gold, 6 for Platinum and 4 for Chairmans Lounge.

The best bet is to choose now and then wait until T-80 to choose again, as said above.

You might also be able to select exit rows now, though as they’re in front of you you’ll have to wait till T-80 to see if they’re available.

Great advice, I just checked again and got exit rows to and from Adelaide....... :D:mrgreen:

Very happy little camper over here ;)

Silver is such a vast group compared to Gold/Platinum, that the only seats visible usually end up being the ones no-status FF's see. The best you can do (as you've done) is take the exits if you see them (and assuming you pass the visual check at checkin). Can someone describe the 'T-80' thing? AFAIK that would only be for international. Final release of all seats into the system only occurs domestically less than 1/2 hr before the flight goes ie. after baggage close out and before flight close - it's programmed in the system and happens automatically. That's why staff are at the back of J (normal) or 1A (upgrade at gate) or 54D (no J left)!

Probably the wrong place to ask but does anyone know the number of silver and, for that matter, gold QF FF?

A number was either estimated or noted in a presentation a few years ago, but since then Silver has become easier to attain and at least a million new members have joined QFF. So no one knows. I’d imagine the only way to find out would be to work in the relevant department in Qantas, probably nearish the top ;)

.

This is pretty much the same thing I asked about this a few days ago to the QF web contact-us process... and got a pretty much cough reply yesterday. The actual question was (paraphrased) "as a SG of long standing, I can use online seat selection, but the first row I see is about 10 rows back from start of economy. Is this correct or should I be able to see empty rows further forward.".

What they told me is that seat selection is dependent on load and can change at any time, but I'm welcome to use the new online seat selection facility that is available to me as a QFF.

I think I already knew that. My strategy lately has been to do nothing, and wait for the system to automatically allocate a more forward Y seat, which happens most of the time.

But does anyone have a suggestion as to why I *can't* see decent seats as a Gold?

Seats forward of row 10 on a 737 are reserved for Platinums and CL, so you are seeing decent seats per your status level. Silver members see less than that too. At T-80, as has been mentioned numerous times, you’ll be able to see more.

Is that just domestic 737 or TT too?

I was able to select 8/9 AKL-BNE-AKL on bronze and could've done better if I'd picked a seat beside one that was already taken. Flights weren't overly empty either.

I was commenting domestic only.

New Zealand is a different country, so that’d be international, not domestic, as much as everyone here claims it isn’t, though I really don’t know how Qantas works in that sense… though your experience would suggest it’s classed as international too.

Shocking really, but that’s international, and a Silver would see about that many seats I’d expect, so I’ll reserve judgement for domestic flights and what can be seen for $20 ;)

After a bit more reading, I am confused as to how I even managed to pick a seat online as a lowly bronze QFF in discount Y. The Qantas website and a few threads on here tell me it should only be available for silver and above.

Available directly after booking at qantas.com, Advance Seat Selection is

complimentary if:
  • You are travelling on any Qantas operated domestic service.
  • You are travelling internationally in First, Business or Premium Economy cabins.
  • You are a Platinum, Gold or Silver Frequent Flyer or equivalent oneworld Frequent Flyer.
  • You are on the same booking and travelling with any of the above mentioned travellers.
I was none of those. Will have to test this again on my last flight as bronze in a couple of weeks.

If Gold got access to row 11, and assuming maybe six rows of J, there would be 4 rows of Y reserved for CL/WP. What I actually have seen in the past is more like 10 rows of blocked out Y before the first seat that I can select.

My next two trips (SYD/MEL and SYD/BNE) are on 767 for all segments. On both outbound legs the first row available in the DIY seating plan is the eighth row back into Y (around row 23)... after which, seating is wide open. So the appearance is more like the first eight rows are blocked to me, rather than the plane has filled..

But something I just discovered: I can select an exit row, which is neat.
