QFF Bonus Double SC offer

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a Bronze member and I received an email from Qantas offering double status credits on flights booked between 2/10/2012 and 31/12/12. I'm currently on 260 status credits and I have a flight (CNS-SYD) booked in V class on 18/11/12. I understand that this will get me 40 status credits and a bonus of 40 status credits putting me at 340 SC and qualifying for Silver.

Later this year, probably on 25/11/12 I'll be flying out to America on a sale fare which would put me into discount economy. So far the planned itinerary is SYD-LAX-SYD all on QF metal. I understand this will give me 90 status credits and 90 bonus status credits.

If I understand correctly that as long as I have a ticket with a QF number I'll get bonus status credits. If that's the case is it possible to fly:
  • SYD-HNL on QF metal (35 SC)
  • HNL-LAX on AA metal with a QF number (25 SC)
  • LAX-JFK (edit: no longer on QF metal but on AA metal with AA number that won't qualify for points)
  • JFK-LAX on AA metal with a QF number (25 SC)
  • LAX-SYD on QF metal (45 SC)
and get bonus status credits on all segments to give me a total of 310 (260 SC) SC? If that's the case, is it correct that I only need another 50 SC (100 SC) to qualify for Gold before the end of the year when my membership year ends? If so I'll be figuring out a way to get 50 SC (100 SC) exCNS (CNS-BNE-CNS on a sale fare?).

The T&C's in the email are
* You can earn Status credits when flying on eligible flights and fares with Qantas, oneworld Alliance airlines (airberlin, American Airlines®, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, JAL (Japan Airlines), LAN, Royal Jordanian Airlines and S7), Air Pacific, Jetstar or QantasLink services - see the Airline Earning Table. Status credits can be earned on flights operated by Jetstar Airways where a Qantas flight number is entered on your ticket when booked in Y, B, H, K or W class, or on a Jetstar Starter Plus, Starter Max or Business Max fare only.

^ The travel required in each Membership Year to attain or retain Silver, Gold or Platinum status level must include a minimum of four Eligible Flight Segments with Qantas, QantasLink or a Jetstar Airline with that airlines flight number on your ticket.

~ The offer is only valid for the recipient of this email for new bookings made between 2 Oct 2012 and 31 Dec 2012, for travel segments commenced from 2 Oct 2012 until 31 Dec 2012 (based on scheduled departure time at departure port). You must register for this offer via the above registration link in the main text area of this email by 11:59PM 31 Dec 2012 AEST to be eligible for this offer. This offer applies to travel taken by the recipient of this email only (regardless of other passengers in the same booking), and is not transferable. Travel is subject to availability and any applicable fare conditions. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other Status credit offer by Qantas per each individual segment of your itinerary. Bonus Status credits may take up to 6 weeks after completion of your travel to be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

† An eligible flight for the purposes of this promotion means any flight with a QF flight number on the ticket where Status credits are normally earned. Status credits may not be earned on some fare types and booking classes including Classic Award flights and Qantas codeshare flights (i.e. with a QF flight number on the ticket) operated by Jetstar or Jetstar Asia other than in Economy booking classes Y, B, H, K, and L (when booked as part of a oneworld fare). Qantas Segments booked in X, U, Z or P classes are eligible to earn Points and Status credits only when booked as part of a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award. For details visit qantas.com.

‡ Qantas provides preferential access, when available, to selected Qantas Classic Award seats to Silver, Gold and Platinum Frequent Flyers. On selected flights, preferential access for Gold and Platinum members may be above the access available to Silver and Bronze members

± Subject to availability of requested seats. Silver Frequent Flyers are entitled to complimentary Advance Seat Selection on Qantas international flights with a QF flight number on your ticket

∆ Extra checked baggage allowance is only available on Qantas operated jet flights with a QF flight number on your ticket (excluding Jetstar operated services). Size and weight restrictions apply. Visit qantas.com/baggage for details.

Ω Access is only available prior to travel on the same day on eligible flights with a QF flight number on your ticket. Invitations are valid for Qantas operated lounges only. See Qantas Club Terms and Conditions for complete lounge access information.

Firstly welcome to AFF.

You might consider a JASA (J any seat award) Ok its points plus pay but the yield of SG points is huge.

May 2011 I was in same boat as yourself had a few hundred status points but needed more to go SG and was offered double, did CNS/TSV/BNE/DRW return all in J except for CNS/TSV leg, cost was 48K points and $250.

Other good JASA runs are CNS/BNE/AKL or CNS/SYD/PER.

However most need to be booked a few months out, but can get lucky or join Expert Flyer for live seat availability.

With recent JASA flight to USA and others planned I'll be SG for next 2 years.

I forgot to mention in the Original post, but for the American trip does it have to be booked via Qantas.com or can I do that via my travel agent. (i'm on better terms with my travel agent than Qantas.com)

Problem with that is I'm only on 22,000 points, this year was my first year of any serious flying. I'll keep that in mind for later years and definitely Expert Flyer. Also thanks for the welcome. :)

A quick run in the states would have you at Gold pretty quickly, or even using the points for the America trip for a JASA on return would be beneficial, given 140 SCs can be had for 24000 points (which is 280 when doubled).

If your sitting on 22K now, scrapping up 2K to do a quick run would not be hard, and picking up the 280SC would tip you over to Silver, on the US trip alone that would mean an extra 10K of points along with a 8000 point loyalty bonus. So you have hit Silver for a cost of 24000 points but earned 18000 back (and another 4K for the run), and are sitting on 540SC, leaving the trip to the states with a mini run while you are there to get 160 SC and hit Gold (or use the 30K earned and do another run on return).

I should really look into this JASA business and get to travel in J (excited), haven't thought of that.

Wouldn't using points like that for the trip to and from America require me to book once I get there? Considering I don't get the points until I actually fly.

I am talking about using 24K now (22K that you have with 2K top up from everyday rewards or similar) to do a run TSV-DRW via BNE, cost is 24000 points, earns 4000 as well as 280 SCs, which would trigger a loyalty bonus of 8000. After the run you would have 12000 points in the bank heading to the US, which will earn 29000 instead of 20000 as a Silver flyer!

You would need to factor in connections for the run (like getting to TSV), and getting home ex DRW, but if your in CNS thats easy, $99 DJ to TSV, then JQ DRW CNS.

Oh, I'm not sure if I mentioned this clearly in the OP but I'll tip Silver before heading off to America. I've got a CNS-SYD trip mid-November in V that will get me 80 SC (with the bonus) and tip me into Silver.

Ah, ok I got confused when you said JASA for the return trip from America. That TSV-BNE-DRW run does look tempting.

If thats the case, then you will have 22K + 30K earned on your return, enough for a TSV-DRW return via BNE that will earn 560SC and SG! (And trigger a 8000 loyalty bonus as well as earning 9862, so its real cost is 31300 points thereabouts!TSVZDRW.jpgTSVDRWpoints.jpg

Yep same trip I did last year (might have been Markis 10 who found it for me?).

Probably do that next year as that is definitely not an option for this year as I won't be on PS until 18/11/12 and out of the country until end of year (when my membership year ends) from 25/11/12. Trying to find a way to get to SG this year with a status run ex-CNS that will give me 50 SC.

Edit: Just realised the double SC bonus won't be valid next year anyway.

It that case look at doing a run in the states where it can be very cheap, worth your time.

Took a look at different dates for the NY trip to suit family in America and now the original itinerary would cost over $4000, hence changed it to AA for LAX-JFK on a fare that doesn't qualify for point.

Now this raises the question of whether 100 SC is worth chasing or fumbling around for SG considering I only have 22000 points and $300~ to fork out.

I suppose a cheap SYD-MEL ticket and a MEL-SYD JASA will give me the 100 SC and only put me $150-200 and all my points out of pocket and get me 100 SC on the dot.

Re: QFF Bonus Double SC offer

Pretty much all depends on your plans for next year. If you aren't flying the status is worthless. If you plan to fly a lot, weigh up the benefits.

Will be doing 7-8 return trips between CNS and SYD next year as well as a family trip overseas sometime (probably going to end up with a status run to keep Gold as well). May not seem like a lot of flying for some but it is to me, only concern is 2014 and onwards where the only flying I'll do is 7-8 trips between CNS and SYD.

Since I'm so close I figured it might be worth it just to see what lounge access is all about and what not, especially since I'm taking an interest into photography and the only decent view of the runway at CNS is in the lounge.

Re: QFF Bonus Double SC offer

Just to double check, when did you book your CNS-SYD flight? After the 02/10?

Also $4000 seems pretty crazy if all your flights are in economy. Maybe should just book SYD-LAX-SYD then look at YUP and KUP fares within the states. I don't know much about them but there are some very knowledgeable people on here who should be able to help out.

I booked CNS-SYD 5/10/12 (after clicking on the link in the email to register for the promo, I think 2 days earlier)

Yeah $4000 is insane, called them up and they offered $2450~ on the one itinerary but with the LAX-JFK leg on a different fare or something (something was split to bring the price down). Probably going to book the itinerary but without the LAX-JFK leg and book it separately with AA on a YUP fare or something (but they all seem to be $1400+... There's some other promo P fare that's $500 though, might take that)
