I'm sure this has been discussed before, but are the fan blades removed from the engine in this configuration, or do they actually spin (from the air flow) like a running engine? Does this result in 'vibrations'?

I believe the fan blade are still there and the engine just windmills. As far as I know, the engine is pretty much ready to be mounted on to the aircraft once it's taken off its courier.

ISTR the blades are removed and then re-installed upon installation. If you can find the thread on the engine failure ex-SFO I believe it was in that thread. Also iirc the 5th engine option pod is only on some of their aircraft and are only designed for the RR fleet (ie the 744ERs cannot have their engines transported this way as they run GE engines).

Yeah, but the GE engines can be dismantled in such a way that they can be transported in the fuselage, but as RR engines cannot, they had to design another way of transporting them.

Thats not true, quite a few of the RB211 operators did not take the VPOD option, any engine can be broken down to fit in the hold of a 747F or IL76 however it takes a lot longer to get back together compared to the VPOD option.

Which results in the same conundrum, take the GE for easy replacements from the hold or the RR with VPOD.
