Question for those who've done this leg of the flight 'domestically' (if at all)...

The family and I are flying QF15 into LAX in early Feb, staying 5 nights in Anaheim/Hollywood and then jumping on QF107 (down the back end of the plane) over to JFK to spend a couple of weeks over that side. Given that we're landing in the USofA courtesy of Q metal we should have no problems with that part of things. My wife's cousin who lives in NJ says that taking this option is way better than having to take any domestic flight as she does it when flying 'home' to 'home'...

How does this flight go 'domestically' in terms of check-in and baggage etc. I assume that as we cleared US Customs coming into LAX then it would similar to doing a domestic leg on an international flight in OZ? (having done it with a 6wk old baby that sort of thing didn't really faze me) Do we just rock up at Tom Bradley and check-in there then through to air-side?

Sorry if it sounds dumb but Ms10yo wants to know everything about what's going to happen (it's her Aspergers side kicking in) and I don't know...

US airports do not have the same outbound international processing as we have in Australia. So its the same process for a LAX-JFK flight as for a LAX-SYD flight except that the only reason for showing your passport at check-in for to meet the ID check requirements. There is no outbound immigration processing in the USA like we have in Australia. You'll need your passport also for getting through security screening, but again just for ID matching against your boarding pass. but once through security screening, you mix with all the other departing passengers, whether they be domestic or international.

Upon arrival into JFK its just the same as any other domestic flight arrival.

I think QF107 is the only flight departing TBIT in the morning so the terminal feels like a ghost town...
QF has 2-3 checkin desks open for passenger flying LAX-JFK.
Security is "express" since the airport is empty!

I just did this (3 days in LA, then QF108 to JFK) and can confirm what the above 2 posters said.
QF108 was the only flight departing for the next 2 hours! Then just 1 more for the next hour.

Hi can someone please tell me how you book this LAX-JFK

I tried on the QF website but does not have the cities linked or intinery

Thanks
Andy

QF does not have cabotage rights in the US so QF 107/108 can only be booked as part of an itinerary originating in Australia with or without a stopover in LAX.

Sorry to go off topic......Duty free on these flights (alcohol)..........SYD-LAX-JFK stop JFK-LAX-SYD (so no LAX stop).....I am assuming you can't buy in SYD on the way out because of the liquid gel rules? and on the way back you would have to get it in SYD. So no DF shopping in the US at all?

IMHO don't bother with Duty Free alcohol in the US. Depending which states you are visiting it can often be cheaper at the local liquor store...

Yes it's like buying cigarettes in Virginia!

I saw Verve Clicquot at Costco for $34 in DC as a good example.

You can purchase DF at LAX when departing for SYD. And in many (most) cases its going to be cheaper than purchasing at SYD. They will only allow you into the DF stores in the LAX terminals if you have a boarding pass showing next destination is outside USA, and I believe they will deliver to the aircraft boarding gate/door for you.

The gate delivery is true for LAX T4 for the QF LAX-BNE flight, however for all other QF flights departing LAX from TBIT, duty free stores are open freely and any alcohol purchases are sealed in a tamper-proof bag, which you can carry from the store and onto the aircraft. :)

To be specific, QF can sell seats on this sector as part of any international itinerary, however they choose not to do so, only selling this if there is a QF segment to/from Oz as well.

Most likely QF has decided to play it "better safe than sorry" with the US regulators.
A nice alternative to cross North America in full international service is the CX flight from YVR-JFK.

Wouldn't worry about duty-free. Even at a fairly small "drug store" you can get the 1.75L Vodkas for about $17.

Makes you realise how badly we get ripped off

I thought it had to be within 24hrs of arrival / depart within 24hrs?

Can you use it with lax stopover for any number of days (up to 365 I assume)?

I did a 3 day stopover in LA between flying on QF93 (MEL-LAX) and QF107 (LAX-JFK) last year. I made the booking on the phone, not sure if it can be booked on QF website.

Interesting. Will have to keep that in mind (although typically I'm transitting straight to destination/home anyway).

The same deal applies for UA pax between SYD and MEL, they can do a stopover in either and just fly the domestic leg on UA even if they are not connecting to UA intl the same day. Only part of a UA international itinerary though.

May have come home with one of those in my suitcase... pity we have a 2.25L import limit, though I did go over, declared, and got away with it

Yes you can - just use 'multi-city booking'. I booked that a few months ago too.
