Recently my QF app has been showing my VA flights and vice versa. This has just started to happen in the last two weeks. Is this normal?

Yes, my corporate travel agent sometimes books one sector on QF and one on VA and both will show on the QF app - they’ll have their own PNRs and you can’t select seats for the other airline.

It will happen when both flights are in the same PNR (not unusual for agency/corporate bookings).

It isn't that they have their own PNRs (they have the same PNR, that is why they're showing). They will have their own airline reference numbers (one Sabre, one Amadeus). Depending on your TMC, one of those will like be the same as the PNR reference, the other will be different.

Thank you, I found it odd, given they’re not under the same alliance but your explanations make sense.
