[h=1]QANTAS Dec 2013/Jan 2014 Bangkok / Sydney Operation Changes[/h] by JL
Update at 0800GMT 08AUG13

QANTAS from 01DEC13 to 31JAN14 is swapping operational aircraft on Sydney – Bangkok and Sydney – Singapore service. Planned changes as follow.
Sydney – Bangkok 371-seater Boeing 747-400 replaces 297-seater A330. Premium Economy Class service is also offered when 747 operates this route.
QF023 SYD1030 – 1535BKK 744 D
QF024 BKK1745 – 0650+1SYD 744 D
Sydney – Singapore QF005/006 operated by A330-300 instead of 747-400. Premium Economy Class service is not offered
QF081 SYD1055 – 1600SIN 333 D
QF005 SYD1450 – 1955SIN 333 D
QF082 SIN2030 – 0725+1SYD 333 D
QF006 SIN2220 – 0915+1SYD 333 D

This makes sense. QF5 and QF6 were the old SYD - FRA - SYD flights. QF23 and QF24 should be busy during Christmas school holidays as it's a pretty good time of the year to visit southeast Asia (although my visits are to beautiful islands in Philippines not Thailand).

Just as well my premium economy booking is BNE-SIN otherwise I would have been extremely disappointed to be stuck in economy on an A330 on a premium economy booking on a 747.

Some interesting seating arrangements on these flights.
J is upper deck only
PE uses the J section in the nose.
Front section of Y gets the PE seats.

To be expected given the timing when J is rarely full, well noted!

Similarly to you, I'm very glad I'm booked on QF5 a week before this comes into effect. Would have been pretty disappointed to fly on an A330 when I specifically booked the flight because it was a 747.

I was booked on QF5 specifically on a day that was a 747, in W, and now I'm pretty disappointed, and that booking is pretty cancelled. Refund only took 2 working days luckily.

Now looking for more imaginative ways to get to SIN, one way, leaving ADL on 26 Dec, for less than $2K. (No, QF51 is not in contention).

I am affected by this as I was booked on QF5 in PE in mid December, actually I started a thread about it last week. I was offered to transfer to QF51 out BNE (with appropriate connection) instead still in PE I did ring and ask what the alternatives are and only got offered Y on QF5 so I decided to take the BNE transfer option. Cancelling is not really an option as this is part of a much larger itinerary.

20 More SCs at least.

True but I actually don't need them as my year ends at the end on Jan and I should re-qualify for WP easily before then so probably would have preferred the direct flight and some f lounge time. I suppose they will be handy for lifetime status.

You were lucky! What some genius did to my booking was leave ADL - SYD as originally booked, but put me on SYD - BNE leaving SYD before I had arrived from ADL, and put me on QF51 in W from BNE. Total journey time something like 14 hours IIRC.

When I rang up to politely enquire how I was physically going to manage that itinerary, I was told that my only alternatives were Y via MEL or get up at OMG o'clock for a 6.15am departure ADL - BNE with a really tight connection time to BNE international. Didn't offer me QF5 at all (J or Y) and didn't offer me the shorter routing via PER either. Didn't offer me J on the domestic leg to make up for the inconvenience and disappointment despite my hint. Didn't tell me that I was entitled to cancel.

As the CSA was one of the rude ones who sound like they would prefer any other job than the one they have, I exercised my AFF knowledge :p and cancelled.

Need to remember for next time around.

I really hate it when schedules like this are changed.

And I also do not understand how someone booked in premium economy is offered altrernatives in economy only when the schedule is changed. Some people booking economy during this period get a free upgrade to premium economy but if you originally booked premium economy on QF5 you are now offered economy on an A330. Makes no sense.

It would seem that one of the options is Y+ on the 51/52, so your last statement isn't entirely accurate...

Interesting.
Flying QF23/24 in mid-August and looking at the EF seatmaps every second row in the back of the plane is blocked (X) - suggesting very light loads so they are trying to spread passengers.
Am surprised that things jump so much over XMas.

It is very accurate.

I was referring to someone booked on QF5 SYD-SIN in premium economy and now with the schedule change to an A330 is only offered economy on QF5.

They should be upgraded to business not downgraded to economy.

My reference to QF2/QF24 is if you were booked in economy you now have a free run at premium economy since the schedule change.

Still makes no sense to me....

John, there are 2 separate members who have posted just before your post both stating they were offered a change to W flying on 51/52.
Hence why I have made the comment that your statement isn't entirely accurate. If you want to believe otherwise and ignore the posts above yours, that's your prerogative.

Which for one was entirely unsuitable.

If Qantas are willing to give those paying for economy on QF23/QF24 a free upgrade to premium economy during this time then it is only fair they also give those booked in premium economy on QF5 a free upgrade to business on the A330.

Am I repeating myself? Apologies.

The fact it was unsuitable is beside the point. You are making it out as if its a forced downgrade.

What happens to those on the BKK services well that is their good fortune

Here is another little glitch I have found in the new year.

I am trying to come back SIN-BNE and then 2 weeks later go back BNE-SIN and then a week later come back SIN-BNE and then 6 months later go back again.

It is forcing me via SYD and if I want the direct SIN-BNE or BNE-SIN flight I need to pay ~AUD300-400 for the privilege.

Very disappointing as it looks like I have to book 3 flights on the A330. :(
