I don't have all my stats to provide, but I would say I got about 80% success when SG, and so far I'm 100% on WP. Primarily I do this on international from AU<->ASIA, but a few instant confirmations on AU domestics as well

So far I've been pretty lucky with my upgrades...

2013 trips
Y+ - J MEL - LAX (QF Bronze)
Y+ - J LHR - SIN (QF Gold)
Y+ - J SIN - MEL (QF Gold)
Y+ - J SYD - HGK - SYD for 2pax. (QF Gold)

There have also been a handful of domestic upgrades I've been successful with too.

I'm somewhat starting to miss my SG card, which sadly dies at the end of June and I won't be travelling until August

Will QF always fill an empty seat in a higher cabin if there is a seat and an outstanding upgrade request?

Since the changes to gate upgrades, I'd say there are far fewer premium seats going empty.

F cabin usually full on SYD-HKG-SYD sectors IME.

We got our first ones ever at the gate last Sunday Sydney to Melbourne QF431. Was full of Channel 9/10 celebs on their way to the Logies so was very pleased to have scored what looked like the last two seats and was very welcome after a long trip from Shanghai to Sydney

I find points upgrades to be very unreliable, maybe a 25% hit rate. The one which I requested last week didn't come through

As a result I try to book the cabin I want to fly in at the outset. In recent years my QF points have been spent on awards - mostly classic and the very occasional [M]ASA.

Points upgrades since WP have been 90% successful - this was up from about 50% success rate when SG. In addition have been upgraded from PE to J Singapore to Melbourne on last two flights and received two complimentary domestic upgrades. In summary - status matters.

Been platinum for a few years now - haven't had a domestic op up. In fact in 16 years of being gold and plat only once had a domestic op up and that was in school holidays when y was totally overbooked. Have requested our first ever points upgrades in July (syd-lax And lax-syd) but not hopeful....

That's disappointing to hear. I suppose the route and time and luck may be a significant factor. My son has never been knocked back on a points upgrade on flights in and out of Asia - even from discounted economy to J. - I suspect he will be devastated when a knock back finally comes. When I was SG I found it much more difficult - but that changed with WP. Wish you all the luck with your points upgrade to LAX.

I've had one op-up from W to J a couple of years ago. That said, I'm only reporting successful points upgrades in this thread. I'm running at 100% with only the most recent (QF6 x2) with me as a WP and even with this case the request was made when I was SG.

Agreed, and I am always happy to fly in the cabin I book and I prepared Mrs_O for that fact before our trip to SIN. She was over the moon when it came through however as this was her first experience of international J.

Thank-you didn't mean to sound whiny I have always felt that you should only expect the cabin you pay for and the rest is a bonus. We found ourselves a bit short of money after an extravagant trip we are planning for Africa and when some cheap fares came up for the USA we grabbed them as an opportunity to visit our son in San Francisco - I then tentatively put in for upgrades but I am trying not to think about them - wonderful if we get them no biggie if we don't!

I got one straight over the phone (domestic Flex to Business), as soon as I confirmed that I want to use my points. The flight got cancelled then, though. Tough luck.

Now I've requested two more, but I'll have to wait and see if I get them.

I'm bronze (almost silver, but I know that doesn't matter) and have requested an upgrade to Premium Economy on MEL-LAX in July. Am I any chance or should I just not get my hopes up?

It is called a lottery for a reason - sometimes you are lucky sometimes not.... Obviously as a bronze you are quite low down the pecking order, but it just depends..... There is a site called flight stats where you can check the loads on your flight. IF PE is really empty then you stand a better chance than if it is already quite full. I would suggest that you don't get your hopes up and then be extra excited if it comes through.

I agree with this.

The thing that Flightstats won't tell you though, is how many J pax have put in for upgrades to F, leaving seats free in J for W (or Y) pax to move to J, thus leaving seats free in W for a NB seeking an upgrade from Y.

Upgrading is a dark art taught at Hogwarts so unless your name is Harry, Hermione or Ron you won't know the answer till you fly

With a 100% hit rate (albeit on quieter international routes and domestic) it appears that I must have been educated at Hogwarts. I definitely went to boarding school but I don't remember having to use Platform 9 and a half to get there .

Had already checked flight stats. (At least) 9 available in PE as well as J and F. Will definitely not be expecting it and will take it as a pleasant start to the trip.

Make sure you opt in for gate upgrades and also do not under any circumstances change your PIN between now and then

I have an upgrade success rate of around 0/51 in 2013, thanks to 90% of bookings being in deep discount. Yet to convince company that they should pay for a higher fare class just so I have a chance to upgrade.

If 90% of those fares are "deep discount" & thereby ineligible for upgrades, saying you've been unsuccessful 51 times is inaccurate as a true reflection would be to only count the fares that were eligible for upgrade when an upgrade request was registered.
