QF Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

SMS overnight that upgrade Y Flex to J on QF81 failed (QF Gold). As expected given that the Ja cabin was sold out all last week.

Potentially silly question, but have domestic upgrades always been confirmed 1-3 days prior to the flight depending on status?

The last few times I've applied for them they've been confirmed immediately (though I can't recall if the timing was within that timeframe, my sense is my requests were much earlier, which is why I ask)

If there is availability for business reward tickets at time of requesting the upgrade you get confirmation immediatly. You can check on the Qantas website by trying to book the same flight again.
Otherweise you'll get confirmation up to 3 days in advance I believe.

No, most of my domestic upgrade requests were not confirmed until T-72 hours and even once at the gate. Unlike many other posts, I have never received an immediate upgrade. However, I usually book 6-12 months in advance and QF could still be hoping to sell J seats for real money.

The distance out from travel doesn't matter, but there is one key timing element, which is that you must wait until the booking is confirmed & ticketed, before putting in the upgrade request online. If there is Classic Reward availability for a J booking (or inventory in 'U' class, when looking in EF), and your domestic flight is ticketed, then when you put the upgrade request in, it should immediately confirm for you.

If you've put a request in and realise later that ticketing wasn't complete at the time you did, then check again for that Reward availability, then cancel and request it again... It will confirm the upgrade (if available) when you do so.

Cheers,
Matt.

Sorry, but my experience is as I stated. Flights were definitely ticketed. I had the e-tickets printed In every case. These were often on a B737. Of course there is the possibility that reward seats were gone so QF was waiting to until T-72 before allocating remaining empty J seats to WP.

Ah ok, I think it is the lack of reward availability then. All the flights I was looking at are confirmed when I go into the booking information, and I have received the itineraries in email with the e-Ticket numbers.

See what happens closer to the flights I guess, if it isn't meant to be then it isn't meant to be.

Yes - likely the case; It's one or the other (or altogether broken!). Keep an eye on availability through a Reward flight search on QF for your flight, or by asking for availability via this AFF thread. If a reward seat shows up before you've been notified (which won't happen until about 3 days out), I would cancel the request and resubmit it to lock it in.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks, I appreciate the info and tips

Just notified of a successful upgrade at T-26, saver Y to J on QF2 SIN-SYD tomorrow for myself and my partner. First time flying business internationally! Bronze+QC status
Congrats and welcome to AFF, nice first post.

Seems anecdotally people don't need uber-high status for upgrades to come through now which is great news.

Notified via SMS at T-10 of successful upgrade from Y to J on QF25 SYD->HND for my GF and I. Recently-minted WP - they kept me sweating on this one 😅

(Based on OLCI, the J cabin is chockas. So much so that they've split our seats and we're now sitting on opposite sides of the aircraft)
Is she WP as well? I think even if you put in a request it would be processed at her status level (unless you're WP1), so I'm surprised.

There's still a seat for sale (J1), and below is the current seat assignments... You will probably be able to sort something out at SYD F check-in, or while you wait at the lounge, but it could depend on status of others in the cabin or their willingness to move about a little. Congratulations, and enjoy the flight up (regardless of where you might be sitting... it's a heck of a lot better than it would be behind the curtain!)

That P1 exception is when upgrading a family member who is travelling on their own PNR.

When you're travelling together on the same PNR, your status works for the whole group.

No, she’s NB.

Cheers Matt! So looking forward to this!! I love it when a plan comes together 🙌

Yeah, that was my understanding too. I suspect I was made to wait a bit longer given my newly attained status. Seem to recall someone mentioning a similar issue earlier (I.e. request processed as SG rather than updated WP status), but perhaps I’m imagining things? 🤔
