Thanks markis10. Are those figures from a public (ie web site) source? ( I doubt it :) )

If you can be bothered, you might check the AirNZ loadings AKL-YVR.

I just don't get it. Do Air NZ like running unprofitable routes? Why would they do AKL-YVR 5 x a week if their *A partner is running a daily one out of Sydney?

Yes the figures are very much public:

International airline activity

But markis10 - I don't know if my maths is wrong or something but just looking at the Oct-12 stats and the 7699 PAX IN from 8370 SEATS IN does that not translate to a load factor of around about 90%? I know its a long flight, but if you can't make money on a B777 service with 90% load factors then surely when could you?

You lose the money going back out with the Oct figures, a route would need to have over 90% load both in and out consistently to warrant competition in my opinion, which was what QF used to do on the LOTFAP routes until recently.

Apologies - there was advertising over the top of the stats on the right hand side that I couldn't see earlier. I can now. Aside from the drop in PAX out in Sep and Oct 2012 the other numbers look alright, I guess its a bit of a seasonal thing too with Canada not having snow by then and a bit late in the summer inside passage cruise market? Or the Canadians just like it so much they are staying here in Oz?

Whatever the case I had a look at some dates for SYD-YVR Air Canada return fares and they were fairly reasonable prices for Y, only $200-$300 more than QF's SYD-LAX return fares.

I haven't looked for a while but after a holiday to Canada and suffering or enjoying (really not sure which) QF on ADL- SYD- LAX - then Alaskan to YVR I did a bit of poking around and I "think" from memory the number of seats that the Canadian government allows to be direct is also very restricted. Happy to be corrected of someone does the real research. This was influenced by experiencing the AC Y product domestically from YYC to YVR and being very impressed.

In saying that I would have thought that a direct flight form an Aussie port to Calgary ( this would potentially be a stretch ) would have some market potential as Canada is a hard country to travel in ( it's big).

If Philippine Airlines join OneWorld as rumoured, then that will give OW FFs another option come 2015.

Personally, I get a chuckle out of every thread where posters ponder about future QF routes.
QF only ever trade or reduce routes.......they never increase routes.

Buenos Aires was traded for Santiago
San Francisco was traded for Dallas
SIN-BOM was removed, Beijing was removed
AKL-LAX was removed
SIN/HKG/BKK-LHR is traded for SYD/MEL-DXB-LHR

Gold Coast was added!!!!!!!!!!..............for EK.

True enough, but gotta have something to occupy time in the lounge!
