Qantas cancels Dreamliner order in readiness for Jetstar long-haul slowdown

QANTAS is hedging against slower growth in Jetstar's long-haul operations by cancelling a firm order for one of the low-cost carrier's Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

But it is boosting its domestic fleet with the addition of five 125-seat Boeing 717 aircraft and three 74-seat Bombardier Q400s, with deliveries slated to start in the second half of the year.

The new domestic aircraft will be used to pursue growth opportunities in short-haul markets such as Queensland and Western Australia.

I wonder where they are getting the 717s from. Considering there are only 156 ever built with the oldest just under 14.5 years old and the youngest being just over 6.5 years old. Out of the 156 ever built QANTAS already flys 13 of them.

If I'm to understand the limited amount of article I can see, they're cutting the 15 787's to 14?

Good news for QFLink! :)

Probably the Mexicana Click birds.

Something tells me the CapEx cost of one dreamliner roughly equals the total CapEx of the other aircraft QF have now committed to.

Yes, 3 x Dash 8s would be the same cost of the dreamliner, while the 717s would be very low in cost given their age! Of course they want affect the much hyped reduction in Qantas fleet age because they are not Qantas operated ;).

Can you please tell me exactly what QF paid for their 787s?

KTHXBAI

Who knows what it was. Do note though the Q400 price quoted is also list price, so again the actual price I would imagine would be south of there by a fair bit. So from a comparision view point the figures are the best anyone can provide.

Do they have a plan to replace those B717s with a newer jet aircraft? I'd love to see an A319 with Business and Economy expanding into previously abandoned QF markets. The Sunshine Coast for one.

With 125 passengers and a fleet that provides commonality re spares and crew, I cannot see the 717s going anywhere for awhile.

Dreamliner Order Again Changed , 4 only for JQ

AJ has changed the order again, with only 4 Dreamliners to be received by the Qantas Group for Jetstar. Apparently the other 46 aircraft may eventually be received down the track as different variants. Looks like those B767s might be staying a tad longer, as the JQ A330s will be needed in prepare fleet as well. Article in today's Sydney Morning Herald Travel section.

Evidence that long haul LCC is not viable I suspect.

I haven't seen the article but this seems a bit confused. Basically what happened was they cancelled 1 order for Jetstar, reducing it from 15 to 14.

There is a second set of options for 50 aircraft, which you seem to refer to. It is quite possible that additional Jetstar aircraft will come out of this 50 (and maybe they have decided that 4 will!)

Southwest inherited quite a few after acquiring Airtran, I wonder if they could be coming from them?

Scott.

As I mentioned earlier I expect the same source for the last ones, ex Mexicana Click, including the last 717 ever built (55194), some have had only three years service and there are still around 20 at Victorville keeping some old QF birds company:

It would be a fitting home considering the paint scheme:
