I'm considering moving to London in a couple of months and if I decide to go in J, I'll fly CX and AY (since it's about half the cost than with QF or BA).

Both airlines state 30kg allowance for J. I'm QF PS, which I see entitles me to an extra 10kg on QF flights. I can't seem to find a reference on the QF site to that 10kg applying on other OW flights. Nor can I find a reference on CX or AY's sites stating the allowances that other OW frequent flyers have on their flights, only what their own members are allowed.

So, as a QF PS flying J with CX and AY, do I get 30kg or 40kg? (To state the obvious, no, I'm not flying via the US). Thanks for your help.

P.S. - I didn't want to start another thread, but wanted to say a big thankyou to the members of this forum for the collective help you've given me since I joined mid-last year. I just completed a big holiday to Europe and NYC with QF and LX in J (trip report is on FT) which I planned and booked after asking many questions on here. Many thanks for all your help, my trip was brilliant.

Hi estate,

As you are not going on QF metal or a QF flight, I believe the 10kg does not apply.

So you will be stuck to 30kg ...

The Ruby Status does not state extra luggage ...

I too am QP PS, so I had to check as well! Good to know.

As stated, extra baggage allowance isn't an alliance-wide benefit, not even for WP/Emerald members. However, it doesn't hurt to plead your case with the airlines prior to travel to see if they'd increase your free checked baggage allowance.

In any event, it might just work out cheaper and easier shipping your stuff over to London than incurring excess baggage charges.

If luggage allowance and cost are important , I would consider Emirates or BA

Emirates tend, ime, to be a decent price and have a 40Kg allowance in business class as standard.

If you can get a decent price with BA, then they would allow 3 x 32 Kg plus a pretty low cost for a 4th bag

Thanks for the information, that's a shame it's not a OW-wide benefit.

And thanks for the tip about BA, Dave! I found a fare that (according to Webjet) is ticketed with BA that leaves SYD on BA10, and connects to another AY flight in BKK. The cost is almost identical but since I'm checking in at a BA counter in SYD, I could use the 3x32kg allowance, and as the bags would be checked all the way through to LHR, Finnair wouldn't have the opportunity to object, is that right?

In a way yes - but what about the way back?

It does depend. Is it a through fare or a fare to BKK and then a fare to LHR. If the former then you may be able to get the 3x32. It is a risk and could be very expensive if you end up having to pay AY excess baggage on 66Kg in BKK

As you are not going on QF metal or a QF flight, I believe the 10kg does not apply.

Both the metal and the flight number must be QF for the additional baggage to apply. For example in the following two situations the additional baggage wouldn't apply:

Flying BA7311 (Codeshared flight on QF1).
Flying QF319 (Codeshared flight on BA16).

[Of course if flying on the flight number QF1 would get the additional baggage].

While I think that's what you meant to say, it wasn't really clear.

Yeah, excess luggage rates on planes are fairly exorbitant - especially if having to pay them to 2 separate airlines. Of course there could be potential customs duty type issues and that is something that needs to be examined before working out what to ship.

But even with the extra 10Kg QF allowance would only be 40Kg vs the 96Kg which BA offers business class to all passengers
