QF Retrofitting 747's

I have heard this term 'retrofitting' around the traps.


Does anyone know what it means, benefits and was it planned given the huge delays in replacing the fleet with A380/787's ?

I personally love the 747, if they could make it quiter, more the better. A most reliable workhorse.

I believe this had to do with refitting the cabin hard product to match that of the A380, i.e. Skybed II etc. As well as this, all 747s will become 3-class (J/Y+/Y).

I think there was a thread foreshadowing / discussing these changes... can't find it right now...

I think no one has any problem flying a 747 per se, but the popular media attacks the age of Qantas's fleet, which includes a number of 747s.

Retrofitting is probably not the correct word, reconfiguration might be better, with the removal of first for 9 bodies and the conversion of the two class to three class aircraft.

I agree. I always thought that zone A in the '47 was a peaceful haven until I took my first flight on a 380.

The word "retrofitting" is seen quite a bit when it comes to upgrading different bits of aircraft, and I agree that "refitting" is a little less coughbersome.

As to the wisdom of removing F from the 747 fleet, that remains to be seen. Personally I believe it is an incredibly shortsighted decision which, although it won't lead to commercial disaster, will prove to be well off the mark in the long term. If I were a betting man, I would wager that QF management will rue the decision within 7-10 years. If SQ dumps F, I will believe that first class is finally dead.

Well, there's always all the Middle Eastern carriers that all have F.

Couldnt agree with you more NYGuy. SQ are the kings of F service and I believe the middle eastern lot still have much to learn.

If SQ throw in the towel it will devalue the whole global product. QF were not that bad on the occassions I had the privilege the at the very pointy end.
