I am looking at booking a J seat, SIN-MEL in March 2014. Choices are EK404 (B777ER) or QF36 (A330). I'm happy with either. I'm more interested in which provides the better onboard "experience". Which should I choose? Thanks in advance.

How do you define onboard experiences and what are the things you look for specifically? e.g. in terms of IFE, you'll find that the screen on QF J is smaller than the one they use on SQ Y.

Unfortunately, at this stage I'd probably say EK would have a better hard product, and perhaps onboard experience, but the last bit really depends on your status level too ;)

avoid EK its a poor product these days. have you thought about BA, They sometimes offer free one way upgrades to F.

I flew both EK and QF within a few days of each other earlier this year and found the difference quite stark, with EK having a better food offering, amenity kit, and IFE. QF has the better seat and service by comparison, but the cost cutting re meals and amenity packs don't give it the J feeling. My QF service was on a MkII Skybed, I would take aways the seat advantage for the MK1 which does Melbourne.

The EK flight is preferred if you have a connecting flight in SIN. However if you are just stopping in SIN, then I prefer the Qantas arrival time of 3pm (vs EK 11.35pm)

The OP is looking at a choice EK or QF for SIN MEL, not sure if a return is being sought.

I have one night in Singapore before returning to Melbourne. It will be a FF points redemption. Both flight times are fine. I suppose the main things I am considering are, which airline has the better:
1) lounge (in SIN)
2) seat/bed
3) IFE
4) food
5) alcohol (champagne)
I have flown QF J before and really enjoyed it, but I've heard that EK is a step up. But I've also heard that not all of their B777ER have been updated so I run the risk of getting an older model. Apologies for not giving enough info in the original post. Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated.

Lounge - does not matter, you can drift between QF and EK however if your in to bubbles EK is better, if you need a shower most think QF is better. Seat, IFE and Food, EK by a mile compared to a ten year old QF product.

IMHO Avoid QF A330 J at all costs. Tired aircraft, malfunctioning IFE, poor menu, variable service. Seat out of date, but maybe not much difference to EK seat.
