Just stumbled across this deal while doing a regular scan of the QF International Fares page and nearly fell off my chair! This is the cheapest Qantas deal to Hong Kong I have ever seen. The lowest I can recall from memory in the past is a fare in the low $700's.

It's a 3 day 'Flash' sale ending on 13 Feb. I know it's only Y but it's definitely a steal - makes a weekend in HK almost irresistible! Hope someone can take advantage :)

If you are a bit of a gambler and flexible with destinations you could book this and then combine with the CX fanfares when they are released, generally short notice, and get to EU or US for about $1,400. It's not something I would do not but it might have a few years ago.

At that price it's almost worth it to fly to HKG, walk to the AA airport ticketing desk and book an ex-HKG DCIR26 in person and fly back to Australia right away. :p

whats the going rate on a DCIR26 ex-HKG??? (if you happen to have it handy?)

Gee SYD-HKG is a lot further than PER-HKG... Maybe I should go check the prices from PER for QF?

On second thought it might be more useful and constructive to look at what the HKG-SYD-HKG prices are...:(

Well, looking at a ten-day period in May, all Sale fares sold exHKG are blocked (not offered). So the starting fare is in the neighborhood of AUD 1120. Same ten days starting from SYD is AUD 709. With a couple of nearby dates slightly cheaper.

On those same dates exHKG CX offers an N class fare for AUD65 more than QF. exSYD CX S class shows AUD674 V class AUD871.

So I think one could say that some marketing exercises are in "active mode".

Oh yes, Perth, some 800 miles shorter than SYD from HKG. CX's prices are about the same as when SYD is the Australian end (in corresponding fare classes). Perhaps an economics course can use these examples of competition and lack thereof.

Happy wandering

Fred

OMG! I did fall off my chair! I was tempted and got myself a ticket. $599 return from SYD to HKG is incredible, even more so since it's QF! Makes the credit card fee of $30 outrageous though! That's a 5% cc fee!!!

Just buy yourself a $50 Qantas gift voucher as a pressie - there's an immediate $30 saving if paying by CC.

I saw this early yesterday. Unfortunately the dates do not work for me.

Cathay's sale is OK but as far as I am aware does not earn on AA and only earns 50% on QF.

I was so excited when I got the email because I've been trying to convince my Mum to let me take her to Hong Kong for a girls-only week... only to find the dates already overlap with other trips I have booked. Bah.

I just ran a "flexible with dates" search for SYD-HKG-SYD mid May to 17 June and the cheapest offered fare was $738. The discount seats at $599 were either very popular or very scarce to begin with. A Clayton's sale perhaps  so they miss out on my $599 and $30 CC fee !!

Damn, i thought i was almost getting the missus folks off my back, they fart coughd around on a Cathay sale a while ago so i was hopeful this would work but nay ;/

What a bargain!

Never seen prices that good before to Hong Kong!

Flying out from MEL Fri May 29th, Departing HKG Mon June 1st ( arriving back to MEL 8am 2nd June).

$ 599 return.

I managed to snare the last cheap seat on the return segment.

Pretty pumped, never been to Honkers before, right up on the Bucket list too!
