Folks

Spent a very confusing hour on the phone to QF tonight

A little background, Mrs Paddy and I are planning to travel SYD to LHR and as a special treat, in J class, prompted initially by SQ's J Promotional Fare. Didn't like the connection times on offer for the cheaper fares $6.5K for $9K if you travel A380 all the way and ended up finding Malaysian had a "Companion Fare" offer of $11.7K, although we had to overnight in KL on the way at additional cost.

So far so good. Of course QF then responded with their current 2 for 1 J specials although departures had to be by 30 June - Locked in to 3rd July departure

Lo and behold tonight I see Bestflights, WebJet and BA are showing $6.7K return 2 for 1 airfares - QF flight nos on BA metal.

QF's website did not, and still does not show these fares, instead showing $11K ones.

Long story short: made the booking over the phone, with the live person fine waived - QF flight nos and BA metal. Hopefully that information is of use to someone.

I have ended up with a few questions after the phone call and I will be very happy if someone can answer the following:

1. In My Bookings I now have two bookings for me with different booking reference nos - one with the QF flight nos and one the BA ones - is this normal, 'cause it has confused me!:?:

2. I was warned that I would accumulate different points and SCs with BA metal than if it was QF metal even though it is a QF flight no - Read all the T&C's I can digest and can't find where this is documented - What won't I earn on BA metal?

3. Can I upgrade to P riding a QF flight no / BA metal?

4. Is there anyway of doing seat allocation for QF3xx flights before arriving at the airport:?: (Paddy and Mrs Paddy need to sit together)

Appreciate any answers available.

A somewhat confused Paddy

1. Not sure. Doesn't sound right to me, but there could be reasons as to why.
2. Nah, there isn't any difference in earning.
3. No. Only Qantas metal/Qantas flight numbers can be upgraded.
4. I think Qantas has control over their 'seats', so this should be possible via a phone call to Qantas. However BA has pretty stringent rules over who can pre-allocate seats > 24 hours out of flight, and you might get caught up in that.

Recently flew SYD-LHR return in J on BA metal with QF flight numbers, and received 2 bookings with difference booking references in my QF account, so it must be normal.

I was able to log into BA's Manage my Booking and allocate seats.

Hope this helps.

Normal is relative ;)

But whenever I am booked on a codeshare QF flight by an 'outside party' (e.g TA or QF Sales) I always get 2 booking references in My bookings - the QF code share and one for the operating airline. The QF code share booking reference one is the only one that works/you need. It is a bit strange but meh!

When I book codeshare online though I don't get it.... weird!

It is indeed normal. They have to duplicate your booking (I think the booking references differ in the last 2 letters) so BA can see their own flights in the system when you check in.
