I am flying to DFW next month on QF J Class and was wondering the food compares with CX?
Also I notice QF offers pre-flight meal ordering? Is this service any good?

Well, yes. Advance meal selection does work for QF. It's as close as you'll get to being assured of your main meal choice (never a guarantee), plus they have an additional choice available exclusively on line.
Food is a subjective issue. Personally I'm not a fan of the QF offering... it's rare to come across a dish with a sauce meaning they can be a bit dry and uninspiring. CX food is hardly inspiring either... but being pre-plated it generally comes with some sort of sauce for added interest and means the food isn't dried out.
The meal service itself is very different on the two airlines... CX is much quicker giving you more time to relax/sleep. But again that's personal preference as to which service pattern you prefer.
Time and port of departure are key - I've had great QF J meals and some absolutely woeful ones. CX is generally more consistent but lacks the occasional wow.
The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
Also unless the online exclusive option is really good, I don't bother with the QF pre-select. My (current) high status means I will luckily always get what I want, but when I have pre-ordered in years gone by, half the time the crew had zero record of my selection so it it was pot-luck anyway.
