So did I: Qantas FF points for rail?

While the points are a lot I’m tempted for the experience alone as this has been on my want to do list for a while.

not that hard to get those points with card sign up bonus with the annual fees being a lot less than cash purchase price of tickets.

Haven’t checked out to copayments however which could be a deal breaker.

The Classic Rail Reward bookings don't seem like terrible value, surprisingly. E.g. Perth-Sydney on the Indian Pacific is 225,000 Qantas points compared to a $2,599 regular fare. Still not quite the same value as booking a Oneworld Award, but if you have lots of points it provides another good opportunity to spend them for something other than a toaster.

There's a current promoiton of up to 30,000 points off The Ghan journeys until 31 March 2021.

One reaosn ma
wonder why they aren't releasing the platinum cabins for points.
One factor may be that the 'Indian Pacific' has since 2016 only operated one day a week (Sundays ex East Perth, Wednesdays ex Sydney) and hence tends on many trips to be heavily booked. There are often not many Platinum sleeping cabins: from memory, only five per car and often only three cars of these, so just 15 to a maximum of 30 passengers (i.e. sole use can occur at extra cost, but most will have two persons in them).

'The Ghan' operates twice weekly in two months of the year, but then does not run during the Top End wet season in December and January, something I've always considered wimpish as there'd always be people travelling: Darwinites escaping the Territory, or southerners wanting to experience a wet season albeit with massive humidity, plus international tourists (pre or post-COVID-19) who book to experience a hot and wet as opposed to a snowy Christmas or January.

Haha, the Gahn doesn't run in the wet season because they get a tiny bit of water that covers some of the tracks. Doesn't happen all the time but it's one of those things where if it does happen they could become quite stuck. I think this just gone Dec/Jan saw it run from Adelaide to Alice Springs and back.

And some flood issues definitely in play now.
there’s quite some trackwork damage in various places

I couldn't get your link to work, but I have seen that there are some major flooding issues in central Australia at the moment. It's unusually bad right now.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

ARTC is quoting at least 12 days until the Adelaide-Kalgoorlie section is reopened. I would probably put an emphasis on at least, given what's been shared on the internet so far in regards to footage and pictures.
