i was always curious about seating onboard these QF evacuation flights

how do they determine who gets the J seats or PE seats or what? or is it really random luck of the draw?

For the Qantas flights, both the original QF6032 (to LEA) and today's arrival into Darwin, everyone was assigned a seat in Economy. The upper deck business class was used for crew rest/seating. According to the seat maps Premium Economy and downstairs business cabin remained empty although photos in the media show medics and Australian gov staff sitting in the PE seats indicating they probably were used.

According to reports from some of the other countries repatriation flights, people were asked to remain in their assigned seat so that if the person sitting next to you becomes ill they'll know to keep a close eye on the people around them. I wouldn't be surprised if the Qantas flights were exactly the same.

Below is the seat map for QF6032 from Wuhan to Darwin on 8 Feb 2020. It shows almost every seat taken in Economy.

Definitely assigned seating. They will be carefully recording where everyone sat.

And I believe from the reports on Christmas island those groups will remain together in isolation to minimise cross contamination if anyone has the virus.

Interesting Vlog from a UA Flight Attendant who operates into Shanghai recently
