Will Qantas check bags through to the first stop only on a two leg domestic flight? Or do they always insist on checking bags right through to final destination? I tried to call them to ask but message says it's more than a one hour wait on the phone at the moment. Thanks for any advice if you've tried this!

They're going to ask why. And if the connection time is tight they're going to reckon you're doing some 'hidden city ticketing'.

.... which is legal, or not? What if I have a few hours and would like my bag, have you tried this Hvr?

OK I rang Qantas (and waited 45 minutes) seems there isn't a policy against booking luggage one leg at a time provided there is adequate time to collect and return for the next leg. So all good it seems.
