FYI Just received this...

Qantas and QantasLink Domestic Fare Increases

As a valued partner, I am writing to advise you of increases to Qantas domestic economy and business class fares effective for sale and travel on or after 3 September 2009.

Economy and Business Class fares will increase by an average of 2% across the Qantas Domestic network.

In addition, QantasLink fares will increase across the majority of routes for sale and travel on or after 3 September 2009. The fare increase varies across fare types and markets, for full details check fare displays.

Qantas regularly reviews network price points taking into account market and business performance. Our Business, Fully Flexible and Flex Saver base fares have not increased on most markets in over twelve months.

All existing bookings must be ticketed on or before 2 September 2009 otherwise the increased fares will apply.

Cmon QF, where does it stop...

I really do hope DJ restructures its cost base to align themselves as a LCC and then we actually might see QF drop some prices.

My travel agent told me about the increase this morning, but mentioned that overall, she has seen more fares across the network increase on Virgin in the last six months than QF. This was in the context of my flight from Brisbane to Perth, where DJ happened to raise their prices by $10 this week (and not through availability issues).

With all due respect, what a load of cough. It needs to go the other way. DJ need to align them selves as a FSC and then undercut QF for QF to drop fares. After all QF has JQ to take on a LCC DJ.

I understand why as a customer you would want this, but what's in it for DJ? A lot of investment in product development etc to take on QF that have much of the business market cornered.

Would you say the same to other industries? Prices in shops rise over time , why would air fares not be the same. a 2% rise after 1 year does not seem that unreasonable to me

Given Jet fuel prices have spiked up in the last month, its not really a surprise either.

oz_mark, as a customer I know that competition in a market space creates a better product and at a better price. I am sure we would all like that. As for DJ, I think they are rather happy being "in the middle".

My comments where a reply to if DJ became more LCC, it would force QF prices down, something I find hard (impossible?) to believe.

It was $5 more BNE - SYD earlier, but now I just looked and the price is back to what it was last month (not in the sale). Maybe they've had a bit of backlash?

Was this the fare that moved? What price are you seeing?

I agree. DJ raised their prices as well, just a lot more quietly... keeping the air fair right.... At least Qantas let people know... maybe they shouldn't in future and be more stealth.

Is hidden away on a Travel Agents portal on the website actually letting people know?

Qantas didn't tell the public - they told some of their accounts and travel agents.

Qantas advise agents so their clients can finalise payments of the bookings at that price. They don't really let the general public know.
