Last year with the assistance of AFF I booked my flights for May 2020 from Brisbane to Taipei then to Shanghai return to Brisbane business class using Qantas points, all flights were confirmed. 2 days ago i received an email from Qantas stating my return flight from Shanghai to Brisbane had been cancelled. I chatted with them yesterday and they would not give me a reason for cancellation, nor could they find me a return flight in an appropriate time frame, they did say there would be more reward seat available in about a month but could not promise anything. not sure what to do from here ? I am not sure if it is related to the Corona virus or not but if it is why are they letting me fly over there but not to return? any suggestions of what course of action I should take next.

Welcome to posting on AFF.

As the flights were with the sorta-near-term, then the cancellation of the return flight could be related to the Corona Virus - but I'm not sure why QF wouldn't just say that.

Did they give you the option to cancel the entire itinerary, without penalty? They should have.

QF have cancelled China flights due to the Corona virus outbreak.

Do you actually need to go to Shanghai or just using that as a transit on the way home? If the latter, ask QF to find you an alternative route from from Taipei. If the former, they should be able to get you home another way. I'm not sure if anyone is still flying direct to AU from China, but if not, surely via HKG or something.

Yes, Qantas should be able to open up an award seat for you from Hong Kong to SYD/MEL + domestic connections for you. They can convert any revenue seat to an award seat. You might need to find yuor own way TPE-HKG.
