Hi all,

Heading to LAX in a fortnight on QF55 departing 8.35pm and will be getting a lift to BNE with a work colleague heading to one of our sites, however will be getting down to Brisbane around lunch time.

Will it be at all possible to check-in for my flight when the check-in desks are open for the Auckland flight that departs at 5.30pm?

I'm expecting a no to the above question, so I was thinking my best option then is to pay for some luggage storage for a few hours and head down to DFO and kill a few hours before I could check-in rather then lugging 2 suitcases around DFO....

I think you'll find the answer is a no.

Currently it's 4:20pm and the BNE.com.au website which lists what flights are currently open for check in does not show QF55 open for checkin despite the NZ bound flights being open.

It wouldn't hurt to try and see what happens and worse case there are baggage lockers on the ground floor near the multi storey carpark. From the terminal it's then possible to take a free shuttle bus to the DFO (every ~30 minutes) however make note the last free shuttle is at 4pm! so you'll need to take a taxi/uber after this time.

If you cannot OLCI or need to check luggage then, outside of SYD, flights generally open 3 hours before scheduled departure.

So with an 8:35pm departure, that is 5:35pm.

Having another look at BNE airport website it was around 5:30pm that they opened todays flight.

Thanks for that, I thought as much.

Well it's luggage storage and kill a few hours at DFO for me.

Beware as well an Uber to DFO will still cost you around $14-$16 one way because of the airport surcharge

I know it is not BNE, but they were not accepting bags until 3 hours before international flights at MEL on Friday.

Booked on QF37, scheduled for 5:20pm departure. I had been unable to OLCI but at 2:05pm without bags to check I was able to get BP's at the First Kerbside check in. They were making others on QF37 with bags wait until 2:20pm.

Note that with QF55 being a USA flight, OLCI is likely not possible.

MEL is a bit unique it seems. And apparently it's 3.5 hours for A380 operated flights. And apparently moves are in progress to remove that 3 hour limit.

FWIW, I did an OLCI for QF49 (MEL-SFO) a few weeks ago, received my BP and went straight to air-side with HLO bypassing all check-in counters. So OLCI even for flights to the USA seems to be allowed sometimes... The extra "checks" for flights to the USA were done at the gate.

Last bus from DFO is at 6 pm
Yeah I did see that thanks, perfect for me - I'd rather kill a few hrs at DFO then at the aiport tbh.

I could go into to the city, but apart from catching up with some colleagues over lunch I'll be doing the exact same things in the city as I will at DFO so really can't be bothered :)
