My husband and I are travelling to the US in a couple of weeks time and have tickets in economy on the Qantas A380. We're quietly hoping for one of those phone calls two days before the flight offering us a points upgrade as our fare type won't let us apply for it online. However, if we don't get an offer for an upgrade we will need to sit through 16hrs of economy seating - boo.

There are three cabins in the A380 - front section is rows 50-64, middle section is rows 66-77, back section is rows 79-88.

We are currently seated in row 68 both ways, I moved us back from the front section in the hope we might secure a row of three between the two of us. Less than two weeks out from our flight, the cabin is looking pretty empty so hopefully we will get the three seats between us to stretch out.

Originally the back section looked like it was full, but a few seats have now opened up and I was wondering if this might be a better cabin to sit in as there are less rows so less traffic during the flight? Drawbacks would be the fact that you are last off the plane and potentialy at the back of a long line at customs.

Has anyone got any thoughts on the best section of economy on the A380?

If you can afford to pay extra for exit row seats the 66A/B or 66 J/K are great.

Don't go near row 79!

You might like to investigate 80A/B, 80J/K or 71D/E (you can take turns with the extra legroom seat).

If you can't get those seats, then you are close to the quietest area.

Serfty im curious...whats so bad about row 79? its an Xit row seat is it not?

Sorry to hijack the thread but it's a similar Question:)

We've allocated 64 B and C on the 388 next Month. Should I try and be reallocated? It's rigt near the loos and SeatGuru has the seats as yellow.

All those 'good seats' are already taken so I will perhaps stick with row 68 I think ... its up the front of the second section, and there are no bassinets in that section which is probably a good thing as well. I don't like the exit rows as I like to be able to have my 'stuff' below the seat in front of me plus I am only 5'2" so its not a big deal to have much more legroom.

Its funny how so much thought goes into picking a seat these days now that you have a choice!

MMmmm. Sorry, but it's not a self serve Alcoholic bar :(. Bit of a novelty really, people helping themselves as they please. Guess its less work for the FA's.

O/T, i've selcted 80A for an A380 flight, has anyone actually flown in these seats (extra leg room)? I'm hoping I don't get bumped out of it, as i've flown a similar seat on other airlines and it's great, but not as good as J:cool:.

Cheers

David

Thanks Serfty! I just scored 80A/B from LHR to SIN in November. I also chose 72A/B (set of two) on QF005 to SYD-SIN on the way out.

Well .... we were fortunate enough to get the phone call this morning (2 business days prior to flight) offering us a points upgrade to business class so we took it! Now I just have to dread the trip back - rather than both ways in economy.

Seat 80 A/K.
Can reccomend highly.
No floor storage during takeoff/landing, but direct aisle access via the exit and a large window.
Didn't encounter any problems with the ballet dancers in the galley area as there are no toilets near this seat :p.
Plus if you get peckish/thirsty during the flight just pop straight into the galley.
80A :D
Especially if you are travelling on your own.
Check out Serfty's pics for more detail (previous posts).
Cheers :)

Rather than start another thread, I will just ask my question(s) here.

I have just booked flights 12 Feb 10 SYD-LAX QF 11 (A380) and 23 Feb 10 LAX-SYD QF12 (A380) all in Y (upgradeable though) :(

Firstly, we have been allocated 50 B/C over and 52 D/E back. The seats on the way back look ok but on the way over I am concerned about the proximity of the self service bar.

I am WP and she is SG so is it likely (like what has been posted on other threads) that we could be offered PE seats or is this on other aircraft/routes?

What is the trick when requesting an upgrade? Wait and see what is offered up until the request close period or get in early? What are our chances of getting the upgrade to J given our status ( I understand that there are many variables).

Cheers...

but don't expect much rest in 79C/H as people keep tend to keep walking into you as the come down through a curtain.

Motion seconded - I was seated next to an Important American Businessman in 79H (I was in 79J) and watched his feet get tripped over and walked on a number of times mid-flight. 79J was lovely by comparison :)

Well .... we were fortunate enough to get the phone call this morning

Nice work! :D If you can, try to get something in rows 11-13...

Are you sure the 23rd Feb flight is a 388?

Have you checked the class availability for your flight using KVS/ExpertFlyer/Seatcounter?

The presence of high N, O Q and even X class would indicate the chances of upgrades outside of the norm are unliekly.

High I/T class indicates the chances of a points upgrade are reasonable.

Sorry, meant returning on 21 Feb...

On the way over I0 T0... uh oh
On the way back I9 T9...

Are these likely to change much between now and then?

Hope that gives me at least a chance as I didn't book the sale (cheaper) fare as it wasn't upgradeable in the hope of an upgrade. I know that you should always plan on travelling in the paid class but it doesn't hurt to hope does it?

I and T seats available above were from seatcounter, this post is from expert flyer. I class is totally different between the two?

I booked my J ticket in August for travel (SYD-SIN) in Jan and couldn't get a seat in those rows. Got an aisle in row 17 and so far nothing has cleared in the front mini cabin.
