Sorry if this has been asked already but my searches didn't bring up much.

Do we know when the old 747's that fly to FRA will be refurbished?

I have a flight there next year...

*mods if answered before please remove this thread*

They were refurb'd last year to go three class from two. The new refurbs will start appearing shortly but whether they put them on FRA run yet is another question, the new seatmap was posted this morning.

In a similar vein does anyone know when QF7/8 will become a three class aircraft? Looks like I have drawn the short straw and will have to be in the US mid west in November. I was hoping for a Y+ fare and a J seat!!!!:)

Vh-OJD is the only two class 744 operating with Qantas currently. Most of it's operation is SYD/PER.

In that case, as I am just doing my whY seat selection on these, I know that the 4 class 747 has a cutout for the first row of Y but is there the same cutout on the 3 class?

You should be fine, unless QF change their mind - they announced the first of the refurbished 744 will operate BNE/LAX.

I am flying DFW-SYD in mid November and have been able to select a Y+ seat on a Y fare.
I hope it doesn't change to a 3 class before then!

Right now my fingers are very firmly crossed. We're flying QF8 on PE fares in early November and long ago selected (J) seats in row 30. Earlier today I checked our booking, only to be greeted with the advice:

Your flight is not eligible for Advance Seat Selection however you can nominate aisle or window seat preference.

What do AFFers think? Might this signify an aircraft substitution of a similar type, or a 4=>3 class replacement? <shudder>

Sounds to me like your flight is being operated by one of the new refitted 3 class aircraft. You'll often get this error message when an equip change takes place.

Since only the 744ER flies to DFW, it can't be a different aircraft operating the flight. But it can have a different seat config.

What date?

What date?

Serfty, we're in 30J & 30K on 4th November.

If you're thinking what I'm thinking, EF shows the seat map as I'd expect to have seen it prior to seeing the advice referred to above. At present "our" seats are still allocated in what appears to be an un-refurbished aircraft. Any further insight will be much appreciated!

I'm on the same flight 4 days earlier and it's showing the 4 class EWR config - same as yours (I'm in 36 exit seat)

Thanks serfty, I'll be happy to see you proven correct! At least if the aircraft remains in 4 class config we have a chance of retaining J seats. They're still showing as allocated on both PE and QF, so what the message referred to above means ...

I have been flying J between LAX / BNE; look forward to a more comfortable flight.

I missed my Dallas flight a week ago (thanks to American Airlines) and went through LAX instead; couldn't even get pajamas in J this time. I had been in my travel clothes for two days by then, so really would have liked to get out of them for a while.

The first refurbished aircraft is expected to fly BNE-LAX 3 times a week.

Your flight to Dallas should be on a non refurbished aircraft (subject of course to any last minute equipment changes)

QANTAS News & Information - The QANTAS Source reported this yesterday:

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJU positioned Sydney - Avalon as QF6195 today. This is one of the aircraft that will be refitted to 58J/40W/270Y configuration.

Since OJU is a -400 and not a -400ER, it won't be used on the SYD-DFW-BNE route. So for those of us wondering if our DFW flights will be on the refurbed 3-class planes, we don't have to worry about this one.
