QF 11/12 J to F upgrade?

I have a J booking (with DSC!) in June from BNE to JFK using QF 11 and 12 out and back. This has the change of gauge from A380 to 747 for LAX to JFK.

I made an upgrade request to F on the phone, but was told it was not possible as the flight was sold as SYD-JFK with no F on the second leg.
Now I travelled JFK-SYD on QF 12 last year and requested and got the F upgrade LAX to SYD. Has something changed? Any recent experiences with this?

Nothing's changed.

On QF12, the first leg is JFK-LAX and the A380 from LAX-SYD is the second leg so you can get an upgrade on that. For flights with two legs you'll only get upgraded on the first leg if you get upgraded on the second as well.

For QF11 SYD-JFK as you can't get an upgrade to F on LAX-JFK you can't apply for an upgrade to F for SYD-LAX. Travellers not flying onwards to JFK could apply for an upgrade though.

If you're travelling BNE-LAX-JFK, then you're actually on QF15 and then QF11 - both 747s with no F class.

Good point. Even if flying BNE-SYD-LAX-JFK you still wouldn’t be able to upgrade SYD-LAX as there’s no F on LAX-JFK

Thanks for the comments. I am travelling via Sydney, on QF11 as I stated, and returning on QF12.
My main query was as I had flown on the QF12 last year and upgraded the LAX-SYD leg; but am now being told that can’t be requested.
I will call and enquire again and see if there might be a different outcome.

Your opening post said that you couldn't request SYD-LAX on QF11. Now you're saying QF12 coming back as well?

Husband has had an operational upgrade on QF11 but not able to request an upgrade when you are flying SYD to JFK as one flight
I have had when I have stopped over in LAX for a few days been able to upgrade to 1st
Those trips were last year
