Hi there

My youngest daughter will be travelling Syd/NY in a couple of weeks on QF107.

It's been a while since I have flown that route, but if memory serves me correctly you have to disemark and take all luggage through customs.

I'm trying to give her some guidance on what to do and how to get back to the gate that she left the plane from.

I do recall the last time I took that flight picking up my bag, going through Customs, dropping off my bag on a conveyor belt and then somehow getting back upstairs to the gate.

Can someone who has done this flight recently offer some words of advice on the correct procedure please ?

Many thanks

cheers

Land at LAX.

Deplane at TBIT with all cabin baggage.

Walk for a considerable distance to immigration.

Go through immigration.

Collect checked bags from carousel.

Go through customs.

Leave bags at the re-check position and walk out of customs (not 100% on the order of these, but they happen about here). Unlock bags to avoid locks being cut off by TSA through US domestic flights.

Follow the QF ground personnel / signs and go upstairs to departures area and go back through security at TBIT.

Proceed to gate / lounge as appropriate.

Wait until boarding is called and board the flight as it continues to JFK.

At JFK, all she will need to do is deplane, collect her bags and walk straight out into terminal 7 - no more customs or immigration checks left, pretty much straight on to the curb.

Given that quite a lot of people make this connection back on to the same flight, there is a fairly clear flow to what needs to be done, and she should be able to ask ground crew to confirm as she goes along. On paper it seems daunting, but it's actually pretty straightforward when you're there. :)

[Edit] Oh, and the one thing I would add - once she gets outside customs and into the public area at TBIT, go straight up to the departures level and don't ask / take help from anyone with a clipboard (other than those wearing QF uniform) unless she's willing to follow it up with a donation of money / guilt. Can't recall if they're at TBIT, but they're out in force at T4 and will always get you on the first time through until you know enough not to look lost / politely decline the offer.

Hi guys

Greatly appreciate your help.
I'm sure she will be fine as well but always best to check with you experts.

Thanks again

cheers

djfuzz....just one further question if you could bear with me please.

When you say " walk out of customs" I'm assuming that is not into the area outside of Customs/Immigration i.e. the check-in counters, shops, bars etc.

The stairs you refer to, are they still within the Customs/Immigration area ??

Appreciate your patience.

cheers

You clear customs and immigration, then enter the USA (proper) and then go back through security as if arriving at the terminal for a normal domestic flight.

No! Stay airside in TBIT.

When on QF107 SYD-JFK, after redepositing your bags after immigration/customs, look for the transit/transfer signs and follow them - do not go landside.

If you go right out you have to go upstairs to departures and and fight the masses.

I'd take serfty's word on this - when I did this last you did go landside and fight the masses to get back in (though at that time of day, the masses were very minor), but that may have been due to the construction at TBIT.

If there are any signs for transit / transfer, definitely advise her to take this route - but it should be obvious in any case. :)

Thank you again for all your advice and reassurance.

Greatly appreciated.

Just a case of me being an over-protective father !!

cheers

Good on you, hope she has a fantastic trip. :)

Just to tag on to the end of this thread... I am flying into LAX on QF093. Do you think I could sneak land side for a cgarette (or two) and still have time to get back through security upstairs with the masses?

You'll be landside after clearing customs at LAX, so I imagine so.

What's your onward flight?

Hey Serfty, onward flight is QF107 to JFK. I searched through the threads to find some info, however most of them relate to transferring from Terminal 4 to TBIT, however it looks like my arrival and departure are both TBIT.

muzza; after clearing immigration, collecting bags, clearing customs and redepositing bags, you have a choice.

Use the transit facility to the right (IIRC) and you basically stay Airside - no cigarette.

Follow the passage right out to land side and you can pop outside for the cancer enhancer.

You then need to head upstarts to departure an reclear security.

Note that QF93 is currently scheduled to arrive at 07:10 with QF107 departing for JFK at 8:50 so your time is limited.

Tell your daughter that food options are limited once she heads back through the security checks...
