Qatar flights with Velocity points

Been looking at some dummy bookings with Velocity points.

Canberra to Dublin, 25 February, Business Class, shows up as a very affordable 158,500 points.

My dummy booking is for two adults, and two seats appear to be available. So that's 317,000, isn't it?

Well, no, it comes out as 349,88 points, comprising:

    My points situation makes me want to pay more of those charges in cash, but it doesn't seem to be possible. Am I missing something?

On the payment screen, I believe you can adjust the slider to select how many points you want to use. Any remaining amount will be charged in Australian dollars and is payable by debit/credit card.

I was nervous about going too far and not being able to back out!

Slightly complicated, because I'm considering buying points at the current 40% discount to make up a shortfall.

I know the feeling! You go hmm, why are they making points mandatory? Then 100 pages on you get to pay in cash.

If you’re buying points I’d be comparing the cost with aeroplan.

110,000 each way to Europe, including the Qatar flights operated by virgin. So around $2200 one way plus $200 in taxes. ($2400 all up)
