Qatar Airways will focus on building its agency network, recruiting staff and opening a Sydney office as it begins preparation for flights into Sydney and Melbourne at the end of the year.
The moves follow the long-awaited announcement that the Doha-based carrier will finally
begin operating into Australia almost two years after it was first granted daily flights into
Melbourne.No specific launch date has been set but services are expected to start in November or December.

PARIS AIR SHOW – Qatar Airways will begin operating to Australia
before Christmas and in time for the holiday rush, airline Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker announced today at the third day of the Paris Air Show.

The airline CEO said that Qatar Airways will launch Australian services initially to Melbourne and the inaugural flight will take place on December 6. ....

Qatar Airways set for major growth in 2009, adds Australian points

The Qatari flag carrier will begin serving its third US destination, Houston, this month with 259-seat Boeing 777-200LRs. These ultra-long-haul twinjets will be used to launch direct flights to Sydney and Melbourne from October, subject to Australian government approval. This year the airline will also add two more Indian points - Amritsar and Goa, as well as two undisclosed European cities, taking its total destination count to 88.
