Qantas's weak international network

I remember flying on a Qantas B767 YYZ-HNL... I must have been the early 90s.

They're got more network than a few of their contemporaries .... PanAm, Continental Airlines, Canadian Airlines, etc, etc, etc

I'm sure Trudeau would be happy about Qantas operating services to YVR, but why don't they operate to YYZ anymore?

OK, so as far as I know, the reasons why Qantas doesn't fly to specific destinations is like this:

Buenos Aires: Too dangerous
Vienna: Too much competition
Bahrain: Don't need to refuel on long routes
Tehran: Too dangerous
Karachi: Too dangerous
Damascus: Too dangerous
Dubai: Partnership with EK / Moved stopover to Singapore to improve Asian network

That's the list so far, feel free to give me corrections and tips, they would be greatly appreciated!

Are you doing a high school project or something? If so your school library might have access to online journals including archives of aviation journals which might turn up some information if you do some clever key word searching?

I’d put Tehran, Karachi and Damascus in the same category as Bahrain. They stopped flying through all of those places these because they don’t need to refuel. The other reasons are secondary. (As an aside wouldn’t categorise Tehran as dangerous - western airlines don’t fly there because of sanctions against Iran).

And I wouldn’t categorised Buenos Aires as dangerous, just lower demand for travel to/from the city (perhaps due to economic circumstances, not sure) and most importantly that Santiago is preferred in South America as there is a strong partner there.

Buenos Aires is not dangerous. My first south american trip in 2012, i flew Qantas from Sydney to Buenos Aires (one of the last flights before the route was discontinued) and then flew home Qantas Santiago Sydney direct. Santiago is a better hub for connecting to Latam which is a one world partner - so better alliance connections and a shorter flight.
 
Qantas used to fly to EZE, until around a few years ago. They thought it was too dangerous. Now they fly to SCL direct. Back in those days, they flew SYD-AKL-EZE (I think), and also flew SYD-EZE. What are your thoughts on Qantas terminating Buenos Aires? More information on why they did terminate EZE would be greatly appreciated!

This is a no-brainer. Fly to a chaotic country with no alliances, or fly to a city that is the hub of the One World airline that is the absolute dominant carrier in South America?????
 
What about YYZ? Why was it terminated?

Generally the reason routes are terminated is that they are not sufficiently profitable. This means one of two things - the route is not profitable at all, or they predict the aircraft used to serve that route/city could create more profit flying elsewhere. For example some time ago, about 10 years ago (give or take) Qantas ceased services to SFO, moving the aircraft to serve DFW instead. At the time they suggested that whilst SFO was profitable, DFW was likely to be more profitable using that aircraft. Then a few years ago, when new aircraft came into the fleet, they returned to SFO (from SYD) and subsequently added services from MEL.

YYZ is an interesting one. In the distant past they stopped flying there, then they used to codeshare on Canadian Pacific out of Honolulu to connect with QF services to/from HNL. Then Canadian Pacific collapsed, and Qantas introduced its own 767 services from Honolulu to Toronto and Vancouver (this was around the turn of the century). They didn't last long, and with the expansion of agreement with American Airlines, AA now carries a lot of QF passengers that wish to go to YYZ, often under a QF code operated by AA.
 
So, the reason why they terminated YYZ was because of money loss?

Probably. But not necessarily. Could have been making money, but that same aircraft might have made more money flying elsewhere.

They would have terminated MAN because of money loss, they used to service it like this: SYD-SIN-LHR-MAN. True that Qantas forgot about Serbia, and which every single geography genius knows, is in Eastern Europe. But I don't think they terminated Belgrade because of that, maybe it was too dangerous for an Australian airline to fly through Eastern European airspace, and they would have obviously been distracted by Amsterdam's wondrous sights! But I have a question. Why did they terminate services to CAI? I know it is not part of the Middle East, but can you tell me why? If you can, can you also upload some photos of Qantas in Cairo onto here? I hope it's not too much trouble...o_O

I’m sorry you are incorrect on a few of them, corrections below:

Paris: Boycott of city due to cruel treatment of snails

Manchester: Concentration of chavs too high

Amsterdam; Food expenses for staff went through the roof making route unprofitable.
